Twelve Apostles Church (Mannheim)
The Twelve Apostles Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Vogelstang district of Mannheim . It was built between 1967 and 1969 according to plans by Heinz Heß .
history
The first residents of the Vogelstang large housing estate, which was designed for 20,000 residents from 1964, moved into their apartments in December 1965. For the worship Catholics initially used a three-month chapel trucks of ACN , then jointly with the Protestants until 1968 as a barracks makeshift church . After completion of the evangelical community center, this could be used by the Catholics until the completion of their own church.
At the beginning the Catholics still belonged to the Käfertal parish of St. Laurentius . In 1966 the Mannheim-Vogelstang branch office was set up, and in 1969 the parish curate Twelve Apostles. The foundation stone was laid for the church in 1967 and the Twelve Apostles Church was consecrated on November 3, 1969. In 2003 the parishes Twelve Apostles, St. Laurentius and St. Hildegard merged to form the pastoral care unit Käfertal-Vogelstang.

The Twelve Apostles Church is located in the center of the Vogelstang on a terrace above the parking deck of a shopping center and thus follows the concept of the car-friendly city . In keeping with the times, an externally dominating bell tower was dispensed with. The floor plan of the church space follows the requirements of the Second Vatican Council for a central building . The sacred space with an approximately circular floor plan based on a dodecagon was placed in a surrounding building with a square floor plan. The floor plan of the inner church space is repeated in the radially folded roof that rises towards the center. The glazed gables illuminate the worship room, which has seven entrances.
The radially arranged pews surround the altar area at a 240-degree angle. In 2004 new lighting was installed above the altar, based on a classic chandelier . Roland Peter Litzenburger created the 4.90 meter high stand cross made of sheet copper . He also made the altar , ambo , tabernacle , candlestick and the door handles on the portals. Elisabeth T. Veith designed the room-spanning, approximately 100-meter-long, twelve-apostle frieze . There is a working day chapel behind the altar wall . For some years now, there has been a cross on the roof of the church, which the congregation financed through donations.
