Twelve Apostles (Cuxhaven)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Church of the Twelve Apostles in Cuxhaven - Altenwalde is a branch church of the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Marien in the Dean's Office of Bremerhaven in the Diocese of Hildesheim .

history

The area around Altenwalde and Nordholz belonged to the diocese of Hildesheim since 1824. Only a few Catholics lived there, however, who went to worship in the Sacred Heart Church in the Diocese of Osnabrück  - which belonged to the state of Hamburg until 1937. In 1964 the Church of St. Mary was founded in Cuxhaven by the Diocese of Osnabrück . In 1965 the entire city area was ecclesiastically assigned to the Hildesheim diocese.

In 1969, the "Little Church on the Hill" in Robert-Koch-Strasse was built as a prefabricated church according to the plans of the architect and diocesan building councilor Josef Fehlig (1908–1980). The consecration in the name of the twelve apostles was carried out on September 6, 1969 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen .

In 1988 the municipalities of Altenwalde and Otterndorf were merged. The pastor's residence was Otterndorf. The parish was independent from July 1, 1988 to August 31, 2008. The church was not only a parish church, it was also the location church for the military parishes of Nordholz and Altenwalde. The Wingster architect Herbert Butt created the plans for the urgently needed extension to the church in Altenwalde. The inauguration of the extension with community rooms took place on June 13, 1993 by Prelate Willi Stoffers.

Since September 1, 2008, Twelve Apostles has been a branch church of the newly established parish of St. Marien, Cuxhaven.

Buildings and equipment

The architecture follows a design that was implemented in the Hildesheim diocese in the 1970s, often with minor deviations.

The sculptor Hubert Janning from Münster designed the altar, the ambo , the base for the tabernacle and the base for the statue of the Virgin Mary. The cross hanging above the altar bears a corpus donated by the Protestant communities in the neighboring towns. The statue of the Virgin Mary made of lime wood comes from Oberammergau. The bronze Way of the Cross was added in 1974.

In 1981, twelve embroidered wall hangings depicting the apostles were arranged on the altar wall with loving care. In the entrance area, the apostle wall with the apostle stones indicates its importance for the Twelve Apostles Church. The 13th apostle stone for Judas Iscariot can be seen off the door. In the wall of the apostles with the Christ stone, twelve clay tablets also bear the place names of the parish of that time.
