history

As early as 1897, Catholic church registers were kept at St. Michael, later the Heart of Jesus . From 1899 to 1900 the church was built as a garrison church of St. Michael , named after the Archangel Michael , by the Imperial Navy Office. It was the first Catholic church in Cuxhaven after the Reformation . The foundation stone was laid on July 4, 1899, and the church was consecrated by Field Provost Johannes Maria Assmann on November 18, 1900 . In 1919 the garrison was disbanded and the church passed to the civil parish. In 1924 she received the Sacred Heart of Jesus patronage .

In the 1950s, the parish acquired the "Meyn'sche property" on Grodener Chaussee, in whose former barn the now profaned St. Willehad chapel was set up. After the Second World War , the number of Catholic residents of Cuxhaven increased to such an extent that in 1964 the St. Mary's Church was built in a central location in Cuxhaven. Since then, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche has been a branch church of the St. Marien Congregation. In 1965 the church affiliation of Cuxhaven changed from the Diocese of Osnabrück to the Diocese of Hildesheim.
