The dwarf Filzmützenmoos ( Pogonatum nanum ) is an emerald akrokarpes (gipfelfrüchtiges) Moos from the family of Polytrichaceae .
The species grows on lime-poor or lime-free subsoil that receives sunlight for longer periods of the day. The moss loves moderately moist or dry subsoil and therefore often colonizes cracks in the ground on sunken paths or forest edges. It has 0.5–1 cm long stems with spirally protruding (or dryly curved) 3–4 mm long leaves. These have a smooth, but rough edge on the seat, are narrow, tongue-shaped and somewhat runny. The dwarf Filzmützenmoos rises from the lowlands to an altitude of 2000 m. Its capsule stalk ( seta ) is 0.8–1.5 cm long and arises from the tip of a stem. The capsule is at most slightly inclined and has an opening closed by a tympanic membrane. Over the opening closed in this way, there is still a thick, felty hairy cover (felt hat!). Spores ripen in winter.
