The cypress-like scaly spruce is an evergreen tree and reaches heights of 6 to 15 m. The treetop is broad, columnar with ascending branches. The bark is brown-gray. The branches are thick and somewhat fleshy; they are in three-whiskers. The scaly leaves are about 3 to 4 mm long. They are dull, dark green and overlap like roof tiles.
The cypress-like scaly spruce is monoecious ( monoecious ). The male cones sit at the branch ends, are 3 mm in size and spherical with 2 to 4 pollen sacs. The female cones are hanging at the end of side shoots. They are 0.5 to 1.5 cm long, orange and spherical. The scales are thickened and have a flat triangular, bent back umbo. The seeds are winged with two straight wings. The seedlings form two cotyledons ( cotyledons ). Germination takes place epigeously .
The tree species is very long-lived; several specimens are known to be over 1000 years old.
