The sixth generation of the Honda Civic was built from September 1995 to December 2000.

Various body variants were available for this Civic series : three- and five-door hatchback, two-door coupe, four-door notchback and five-door station wagon. The individual variants were built in different plants. The coupé was made in the USA, the three- and four-door in Japan and Swindon, the five-door and the station wagon in the new plant in Swindon (England). The Schleif Edition was also built in Kaiserslautern.

Body styles

First there were the three-door and five-door hatchback sedans. In the spring of 1996, the notchback variant and a coupé followed.

In April 1998 the five-door hatchback was revised and the station wagon based on it with the addition of Aerodeck was introduced. In March 1999 three- and four-door models also received a comprehensive facelift.

Engines

From November 1995 the Honda Civic had a wide range of Otto engines to choose from. A 1.4-liter engine with 55 kW (75 hp) served as the entry-level variant. The top engine in the coupé, hatchback and sedan was a 1.6 engine with 118 kW (160 hp), while the five-door and Aerodeck (station wagon) had 124 kW (169 hp) for this purpose. powerful 1.8 l engine is used. All of these engines are without exception inline four-cylinder.

Abroad, a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine from Rover with direct injection and intercooler was also available for the five-door and Aerodeck .

The Type R , which was only offered in Japan from 1997 , was only manufactured with a 1.6-liter engine with 136 kW (185 hp).

transmission

In order to transfer the engine power to the wheels, a manual five-speed gearbox and an automatic gearbox were available for almost all models.

In the 1.6i ES (EK1), a CVT was the only transmission offered.

Facelift (three- and four-door)

Honda Civic (1999-2001)

Changes made:

  • Front and rear bumpers including impact protection struts
  • Engine hood including spray nozzles
  • Grille
  • Headlights
  • tail lights
  • Fender (front)
  • Front seats / headrests
  • Pattern of seat upholstery
  • Braking system
  • various interior linings
  • Seat brace

In March 1999 the Civic was revised. The modified rear lights are now two-tone. The orange turn signal glass has been replaced by a white glass that matches the lenses of the reversing lights . In addition, the indicator glasses of the headlights have been adapted to the glass optics of the rest of the headlights. The changes to the bumpers are noticeable in that the ram protection inlays, which were previously integrated into the bumpers, have been removed. Another change to the front apron is also obvious: a set of fog lights (accessory) can be installed under the headlights in the space reserved for this. In contrast to the original, the grill, along with the Honda emblem, has become larger.

Coupe

The 1.6 Si and 1.6 SiR models were only offered with a five-speed manual transmission, but were not available in Germany, while the 1.6i LS and 1.6i SRi models offered a five-speed manual transmission and an automatic four-speed transmission.

Five-door

Five-door and station wagons differ greatly from the other models in terms of body design and interior. They were based on the Honda Domani . The similarity of the hatchback five-door to the Rover 400 is due to the collaboration between Honda and Rover in the development of the cars.

Aerodeck

Honda Civic Aerodeck (1998-2000)

The Civic Aerodeck was introduced by Honda in April 1998 and is based on the platform of the five-door hatchback. The Aerodeck was designed with the European market in mind and was designed and engineered by the Honda design centers in Offenbach am Main and Swindon . The aerodeck was built in Swindon.

A manual gearbox with five gears was offered for each engine; an automatic gearbox with four gears was also offered in the 1.4i S model . The 1.6i LS was only available with the four-speed automatic transmission in 1998; in 1999, a five-speed manual transmission was also offered for this model.

Compared to the five-door hatchback, some body parts on the Aerodeck have been reinforced in order to make the car more rigid. Among other things, the chassis mounts and the central tunnel and frame parts as well as the A-pillars and the side roof pillars have been strengthened.

The Aerodeck has a trunk volume of 415 l and 835 l with the rear bench folded down (according to VDA standard, up to the lower edge of the window). When loaded to under the roof, the trunk volume is 1312 l. The rear seat can be divided in a ratio of 60:40 and, when folded, creates a completely flat loading area that is more than 1.6 m long.

With the unbraked trailer load, the maximum is 500 kg regardless of the gearbox. With the braked trailer load, the maximum is 1200 kg (manual transmission) or 1000 kg (automatic transmission). The payload varies between 400, 420 and 430 kg, depending on the model and transmission.

Furnishing

Driver and front passenger airbags, ABS and belt tensioners as well as headrests in the front and rear area and side impact protection through special door cushions are among the basic safety features of the Aerodeck.

For convenience, the basic equipment includes power steering, central locking, tinted glass and a height-adjustable driver's seat. With the exception of the 1.4i , all models have electrically adjustable exterior mirrors as standard.

An electric sliding glass roof and ignition lock lighting could be ordered as additional equipment in the 1.5i LS and 1.6i LS models . In the 1.4i SR and 1.6i SR models , the customer could also order painted exterior mirrors and door handles as well as light alloy rims. In the top model 1.8 VTi , among other things, an alarm system, an RDS cassette radio, fog lights and limited slip differential were available.
