Straight acting is a gay slang term used to describe a LGBT person who does not exhibit stereotypical mannerisms, style of dress, or behavior. The label is reserved almost exclusively for gay men, and is most often used by those who do not self-identify with conventional gay stereotypes. Because the term invokes said stereotypes, its application is often controversial and may cause offense. "Straight acting" is sometimes used in conjunction with "straight looking."

Criticisms

Sex advice columnist Dan Savage commented on the popularity of the term "straight acting" in gay personal ads, criticizing both the preference, and the idea that a man seeking a gay relationship through a gay personal ad is acting straight.[1] .

Filmmaker Spencer Windes explored the term and the definition of masculinity in his documentary "Straight Acting." The film delves into the world of openly gay men who play violent contact sports. [2]

The theory that the popular view of masculinity has changed over time and the description of a variety of present day masculine forms explicitly supports the idea that there are multiple ways to be masculine or that "masculinities" exist. Prior theories and measures had described a single stereotypical masculine form, often specifying what masculinity was.[3]

The gender role stereotype of the traditional masculine man is often criticized; The idea is that a man is no less a man if he does not possess a certain list of attributes,[4][5] that masculinity is either a bankrupt concept, or that it is a socially-constructed concept (Ortner & Whitehead 1981) which should be significantly broadened.[6][7]

The association of homosexuality (and heterosexuality) with a certain list of attributes is also criticized.[8] In the contemporary heterosexual cultural phenomenon of metrosexuality, men adopt traditionally feminine attributes, such as devoting considerable attention to personal appearance.

Some think that the term "straight acting" implies that a "straight acting" gay man is acting, as if he is not being true to his real self. Other gay men think that to infer such motives from the term "straight acting" is a misuse of the term.[citation needed]

Related terminology

Other terms are sometimes used to describe men who do not self-identify as gay, or identify with the "gay stereotype."

Down-Low

"The Down-Low," or "DL" is a slang phrase used among African Americans for men who secretly have sex with men while maintaining romantic relationships with women.[9]

g0y

The neologism "g0y" is used to identify men who are affectionate with other men, but choose not to partake in anal sex. They detest the ways in which homosexuality has been linked to effeminacy and so have opted to create a new facet of sexual orientation. [10] "G0y" proponents also dislike the grouping of gay male culture with intersexed and transgendered people. The word "g0y" comes from replacing the letter 'A,' representing anal sex, in the word "gay" with a numerical '0.'[11]

Both "g0y" and "down-low" are seen by some as an excuse for homosexual men to stay closeted.[12]

Homomasculinity

"Homomasculinity" is a term coined by Jack Fritscher in 1977 [13] The term describes a subculture of gay men who "prefer other men who act like men." Eshewing the labels "gay" and "homosexual," and rejecting the clone culture of the 1970's. Homomasculinity grew out of the levi/leather secene of San Franciso in the 70s and 80s.

MSM

In the early 1980s the Centers for Disease Control created the term "Men who have sex with men" (MSM) to refer to an AIDS risk group. At the time many criticized the term as a mere euphemism for gay men. A new survey of "MSM" in New York City and the emergence of "down-low," and "g0y" other non-"gay" MSM cultures shows important differences between gay men and non-"gay" MSMs.[14]

Miscellaneous

"Straight acting" in L33T or SMS speak is sometimes abbreviated as "STR8 acting."[15]
