Barnstar

The Original Barnstar
Where can I begin? From the earliest time I can remember, you've been helping me out and being the epitome of a "Wiki-Friend". I think the first time we met was on Talk:Saxophone, where I was having some trouble with my first GA review; you came in with the second opinion. Since then, you nominated me for adminship (when yours comes along, provided I'm not out of the country for the Northern Hemisphere summer, I'll co-nom), reviewed three/four of my articles at GAN, contributed at the GAN, PR, and FAC for Gilberto Gil, my first FA attempt (which sadly didn't pass, tear...), and answered enumerable questions plus did some not-so-serious things. You certainly deserve this. Kakofonous (talk) 22:24, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And, oh yeah, is done, I think. --Kakofonous (talk) 22:25, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow. That's awesome. I'm uberly humbled. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 23:13, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And Daara J. P.S.: WP:200 already? That's just unreal... --Kakofonous (talk) 17:46, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A bit, yeah. Looking at DJ now. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 23:03, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship

I mean this in the best possible way - are you sure you want to be an admin? In my opinion you're an excellent contributor. Once adminship settles in much of your time may be diverted away from editing and towards blocking people and arguing with trolls, not fun at all. If you feel you've already given much/the majority of your expertise to wikipedia then this might be a natural evolution, but by the looks of it you still have plenty of input to give.

Also, (and i want to say this in the most unpatronising way), I notice from your user page that you're still quite young. Remember there is much to achieve in life outside of wikipedia. You may find adminship takes up even more of your time. Is this what you really want? And you seem like a pretty bright person: are you applying yourself as well to other things? For the record i'm also one of the younger wikipedians here.

Wikipedia is a noble project and i appreciate your contributions and enthusiasm. Maybe this is quite a heavy response to a nomination for admin: but make sure you make the most of yourself and the time you have.

Ps. It was neither my intention to patronise nor anger you, only to make you think a little. Cheers. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 15:22, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You know H2O's a 'crat on commons already, right?iridescent 15:26, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It appears it's already too late then. ahh!!! Sillyfolkboy (talk) 17:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Sillyfolkboy, I do understand what you're saying. Something it (partially) comes down to is "are you sure you want to be an admin" - to be perfectly honest, I don't care. Worst comes to worse, I can keep contributing to the mainspace, but if I do pass, I can help out in other areas too. It's not a big deal, I just think I can help the project and the community a bit more. If they don't want me to help in that way, that's cool too. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 01:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair play. You know some people go troll hunting after adminship and it always ends in tears. I'm glad you're not one of them. Keep up the good mainspace contributions. Good luck with the RFA, though short of divine intervention i don't think luck will be a factor! Unofficial support: don't feel offended by my missing signature. Take care. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 22:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comments. I can't promise to predict how the future will turn out, but I've got no intentions of being SockHunter Waterman for now, at least. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 23:03, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: RFA

I mentioned this in your RFA but want to mention it again - I had seriously been considering asking if you were interested in another go at the mop, recently. Best of luck this time around, although it looks like you're well on the way to joining the rest of us janitors ... Arkyan 16:56, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank your for your comments, you weren't the first to suggest I run. :)

Just noting that it has now been 10 days since I last posted my sourcing objections, and the nominator has yet to address a single issue. He's certainly been active on Wikipedia, so it doesn't look like time constraints is the issue here. In my opinion, the sourcing issues I raised would mar the article from meeting even GA standards, as a large chunk of the article's beginning (the part I checked in-depth) misrepresents the contents of the references. BuddingJournalist 17:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've commented again. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 01:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, H20, good luck on your RfA, i voted to support you. A few weeks ago, you quick failed the above song i nominated for GA. Admittedly it was a little slack on depth. Since then ive expanded the lead and the "music video" section. Im not really sure what else to add, would you mind taking a look at it and giving a few suggestions before i renominate it. On the talk page you did link me to an article to find inspiration but that was an FA article. I have no intention of getting "Feedback" to FA - ever. I always find singles hard, albums and artists are so much easier. I look forward to your thoughts, cheers. --Realist2 (Come Speak To Me) 19:21, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. :) If I have the time I'll try to take another look some time soon. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 01:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Hey Water, Could you do me a favor. I'm working with a coachee who has a history of having images deleted. His last few images have not been deleted, but he had about 20 deleted in November. Images are not an area where I am strong, could you come over to his coaching page and give us BOTH a tutorial on images? I figure that if you are a crat on Commons this should be easy for yaBalloonman (talk) 05:44, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh God, that page is really long. If you only want image-related comments, could you set up another page (User:Happyme22/image coaching?) so I don't have to navigate that every time, please. :) dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:37, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: RfA

I'm not sure there's anything that would change my mind in particular, I mean, I've seen your edits and I've seen you around elsewhere and almost everything i've seen is good. However, if a point has been raised about racist comments (i'm not sure about how substantial these claims are, but I trust OrangeMarlin just as much as I trust your opinion) then I have to take it into account, IMHO. If you could point out which incidents he is referring to then I may be able to further make up my mind.

That said, the incidents were supposedly 'off-wiki' and I may switch to support for that reason. To be honest, as you may be able to tell, i'm really unsure, thus the neutrality. Regards, CycloneNimrodTalk? 09:49, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe he is referring to this blog post I made (as have some others in the RfA). I don't consider myself racist, and I disagree with his interpretation of the situation, but it's an opinion he's entitled to. I don't want to put words in his mouth, but from reading his oppose I take it this is why he's made it (as well as his other comments on the RfA page, obviously). dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 09:54, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, now had I seen that before I would have continued to support! There is nothing there that indicates you won't make a good administrator and there's nothing that implies you are racist, either. I'll strike my vote and switch to support. Regards, CycloneNimrodTalk? 10:01, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I'm really struggling with this. I'm going to ponder it for a few days and see if I can completely forget to come back to it in time. Assuming that I don't (completely forget), I'll possibly pop back. Maybe. Oh. Does that sound wishwashy? Oh gosh, is that the time? --Dweller (talk) 13:35, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

Just a quick note to let you know that I elaborated a bit at your RfA on my comment there. I also wanted to say, given recent events, that I haven't had any on- or off-wiki contact with anyone regarding anything related to you or your RfA. It's sad to feel the need to say that. Canvassing people to oppose an RfA is just wrong, and I'm sorry that you're having to deal with it in yours. Anyhow, my opinion is just... my opinion; your RfA looks likely to succeed, so take it for whatever you believe it to be worth. Best of luck. MastCell Talk 16:42, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks MastCell, appreciate the ping. The investigation into the canvassing is ongoing, I believe, but you say you weren't told and I believe you. We'll see what happens. I'll take your comments on board. Thanks and cheers, dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 23:03, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My summary of your RFA so far

I took the time to read pretty much all the whole thing as i'm sure you have. Just thought i'd give you my perspective on it:

  • Firstly, I changed my "cool-guy-unofficial-support" to a real one. Secondly, you should see the oppose section of your RFA as an editor review of sorts. Having your flaws pointed out to you in public will surely irk you but also it can be a path to self improvement.
  • The major oppose reason seems to be lack of maturity; run with that and ensure you're never too hasty, calling on other admins' opinions when controversy looms.
  • The second big point seems to be lack of trust: trust is easily lost and hard to regain. I'm sure some people would still oppose per the GA thing if you'd applied in five years time. I think you've improved from this mistake but, at the risk of sounding unpopular, I'm sure there are some articles without FA or GA status that actually are better than some of their badged friends. Remember: the most important thing is that an article is improved, even if it fails a review.
  • You are seen as keen for adminship. An adequate concession to this would be not to go tool crazy if you pass the RFA; avoiding blocking/unblocking where possible as this seems to be a key worry.
  • Complaints of you over stating your achievements: whilst you should be proud of your work - try to let it speak for itself. (I will say however that these facts are bound to come up in RFAs and i've never seen you say "hi, I'm Dihydrogen '10 FA' Monoxide")
  • Some seem to react badly to your sarcasm and humour. Be aware some people just will not like this or will see it as inappropriate, especially coming from a proposed admin. This does not mean there is no place for it :)
  • Ignore the "white pride" furore, this is just an inflammatory topic and regardless of your original intentions the mere mention of this will cause friction. Similarly, stay away from "Armenian Genocide", "Intelligent Design", "Palestine", "Paedophilia" and any other topic that brings a heated crowd wherever it goes.

I hope my obvious, inane observations are of some interest to you. Otherwise: unlucky you. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 00:04, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, thank you for the support. Secondly, you're right, and I've been trying to look at it like that, without getting too hung up on it. It's only the internet. Thanks for the other comments, I think I agree with most, if not all, of them. I've probably got a lot of comments and critique to respond to, but I'd rather wait until after the RfA. I need a bit of time to reflect on it without having to watch for updates at the same time.
Anyway, thanks. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 01:07, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well done

On your exemplary behaviour and responses to the drama exploding on your RfA. Good luck with whatever comes next, and the inevitable scrutiny on the actions you take for the next six months, whether admin or not! --Stephen 00:50, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. It's been a tough few days. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 01:07, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My support

If you don't get it, nobody should. All the best to the editor with an extremely nice, and totally individual style, when dealing with very difficult subjects. You have my total support. :)--andreasegde (talk) 01:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
