Life and Career

Born in Chicago and raised in Arlington Heights, Il, Hurst received the [[Bachelor of Arts]] degree in History from Trinity International University, Deerfield, Il (1969), the Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees (1973, 1976) from [[Princeton Theological Seminary]] (where he worked under, and assisted, Bruce M. Metzger), and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford University, England (1982). For the latter he worked under the late G. B. Caird. Following Caird's death, he acted as literary executor for the Caird estate. Before beginning teaching at the University of California in 1983, he held positions as Instructor in Religion at Bloomfield College, NJ (1973-74), Lecturer in New Testament Studies (1979-80) and Junior Dean (1980-81) at Mansfield College, Oxford (1980-81), and Assistant Professor of New Testament at New College, Berkeley (1983-84). Among his guest lectureships, he was recently the Kermit Zarley Lecturer at North Park University, Chicago (2004).

Areas of Activity

Religious Studies

Considered a major authority on the Epistle to the Hebrews, Hurst's work has also focused on, among other topics, ethics in religion, the Aramaic language of the Gospels and Acts, the Dead Sea scrolls, early Christian thinking about Jesus, and religion and film.

Film History

Hurst is also a reputable film historian. His work centers on the relationship of film and music and of film and religion. He has appeared in numerous documentary features (on DVD and television, including the BBC and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation) dealing with various aspects of the history of American film. He is seen in DVD featurettes accompanying "The Maltese Falcon" ([[Humphrey Bogart]]: The Signature Collection, Vol. 2), the films of Errol Flynn (The Errol Flynn Signature Collection, Vols. 1 and 2), and American Gangster films (The Warner Bros. Gangsters Collection, Vols. 1 and 2). In these he has appeared alongside such film personalities as Martin Scorsese, Robert Osborne, Christopher Lee, Eric Lax, Michael Madsen, Theresa Russell, Andrew Sarris, Talia Shire, James Cromwell, Irwin Winkler, and Peter Bogdanovich. In 2005 he recorded the full-length audio commentary for the Warner Home Video DVD release of the James Cagney crime classic, "The Roaring Twenties" (1939), included in The Warner Bros. Gangsters Collection, Vol. 1 (2005). A full-length book dealing with the exploits - on and off=screen - of actor Errol Flynn is expected in the Spring of 2009.
