Negima!? (ネギま!?) is an alternate retelling of the manga series Negima!: Magister Negi Magi. The anime began airing on October 4, 2006 in Japan and is accompanied by a new monthly manga series by Fujima Takuya called Negima!? neo. Both series feature the same characters and locations. However, this series has a different story than the original. The new storyline explains the addition of punctuation to the title.

Negima!? will also focus more on magical battles and less on fanservice. This new season airs on TV Tokyo's late afternoon time slot rather than on late nights.

Overview

Ten-year-old Negi Springfield graduates from the Magic Academy in Great Britain at the top of his class of five including himself. With his graduation, he receives the assignment for his training to become a magister magi, to become a teacher at Mahora Academy in Japan.

Furthermore, Evangeline has a long history with the Mahora Academy. About 15-years prior to Negi's arrival at the academy, Evangeline was engaged in a battle with Negi's father, the Thousand Master. After her defeat, the Thousand Master used a spell on Evangeline which imprisoned her within academy grounds. This curse can only be lifted once Evangeline sucks blood from a relation of the Thousand Master. Upon Negi's arrival, he became a logical choice.

After one year of the story, Negi is involved in the mystery of the Star Crystal. Two representatives from the Magic Academy arrive at Mahora with the news of the stolen Star Crystal. The Star Crystal holds a power that not even the Thousand Master could control. On the side, Asuna leads a group of her classmates in the Chupacabra Research Group.

However despite the new look from the old series and manga this series has been getting a lot more flak from critics and fans alike than when the 1st series aired. Many complaints stem from the fact that most of the characters have been redesigned to look different than from the old anime series and the manga. Most of which center around Nodoka and her new hairdo that essentially looks almost totally different than from the manga and 1st anime. there has also been complaints about her so called "Cosplay Card" that gives her a pair of reading glasses. Also for the reason that Asuna no longer has her signature heterochromia (2 different colored eyes). Many people also are complaining about it because it has nothing to do with the original Manga story line what-so-ever. Many Professional critics have complained that despite that it's a retelling of the story, the story-line itself seems to be totally incoherent and just plain not well thought out. There have even been calls for it's cancellation altogether. And there are rumors that Akamatsu may just pull his license out of the series, effectively canceling the show.

Differences from the Original Story

Characters Setup

  • The majority of the characters are drawn with a more youthful appearance than the first series, with finer details.
  • All girls from Negi's class are introduced in the first episode.
  • Asuna first meets Negi after witnessing his magic.
  • Setsuna runs to class with Asuna and Konoka without meeting Negi before the bell rings.
  • Makie was attacked by Evangeline before Negi came to Mahora.
  • Konoka and Nodoka were attacked by Evangeline after Negi came to the school.
  • Nodoka had an interest in Negi the moment she saw him.
  • Nodoka does not fear men as much as the original series.
  • When Negi attempts to erase Asuna's memories of seeing his magic, Asuna is not stripped of her clothes, but instead, Negi , Asuna & Chamo are hit by metal pans. The same thing happens when Negi tried to erase Nodoka's memories, though only Chamo is beaned by a pan. Apparently, this is one spell that Negi can't get right.
  • Setsuna openly acts as Konoka's protector, as opposed to one in the shadows. Also, the Sakurazaki family has been protecting the Konoe family for generations.
  • Instead of Evangeline having one Chachazero, she seems to have had a whole army of them.
  • Asuna was not present when the Headmaster requested for Negi to stay with Konoka and Asuna. This happens after Negi's first class.
  • Negi travelled by taxi to Mahora instead of taking a train there.
  • Negi wears a wrist bracelet(which was supposed to be his fathers)
  • Chamo is with Negi from the start, and he's less perverted.
  • Chamo is making 50,000 ermine dollars for every pactio made with Negi, a point that is stressed.
  • Takahata used his magic to heal Makie, Konoka and Nodoka after they were attacked by Evangeline.
  • Kazumi, Natsumi, Chizuru, and Ayaka were all attacked by Evangeline.
  • Chachamaru is nearly destroyed by Negi during a fight with Evangeline.
  • After the first battle with Evangeline in episode 3, the anime skips ahead of time after the events of the OVA to when Class 2-A becomes Class 3-A
  • Asuna stopping Negi original attempt to Pactio with Nodoka is now accidental, as she unknowingly kicks Chamo as she and the rest of the Chupacabra Club head to the school grounds to investigate a Chupacabra sighting.
  • Along with a mind-reading picture diary, Nodoka's Cosplay Card gear also includes a pair of glasses, which she wears when using the picture diary. Her Armor Card gives her a new costume and several books, which allows her to read multiple minds at a time and to look up information on various subjects, including those that are magic-related.
  • Duration of Pactio Power is dependent on satiation(hunger).
  • The rooming assignments are very much different when compared to the manga. For instance, instead of Yue and Nodoka, Haruna is now rooming with Ku Fei (although their dorm room does have a hole in the wall that allows them to access Nodoka and Yue's dorm).
  • Asuna rarely been seen wearing her school uniform but only wearing her casual clothings.
  • Chisame's Net Idol Page is 2nd place after someone randomly puts up images of school girls, with Nodoka's image being #1.
  • The Astronomy Club is recognized.
  • Rather than having her harisen be able to turn into a sword during various situations, Asuna now has two different weapons, with her using the harisen when her Cosplay Card is activated, while the sword is part of her Armor Card gear.
  • Konoka's Armor Card item is a set of expanding fortune-telling chopsticks, which she uses as a rope-like weapon.
  • Sayo is introduced much earlier in the series than in the manga or first anime.
  • In the manga, Takahata once said he is one of Nagi comrades that can't use magic. In this new series, he's a mage.

Characters Appearance

  • Asuna's hair, although the same style from the manga and 1st anime series, tends to take on a life of it's own in some situations.
  • Asuna has two blue eyes instead of a blue one and a green one.
  • Ako Izumi's hair is grey rather than blue, and her eyes are gold rather than red.
  • Sakurako Shiina's hair is blonde rather than red.
  • Yue Ayase's hair is purple rather than blue.
  • Natsumi Murakami's hair is green rather than red.
  • Akira Okochi's hair is brown rather than black.
  • Yuuna Akashi's hair is brown rather than black.
  • Misora Kasuga's hair is brown instead of red.
  • Kaede Nagase's hair is now brown (her original color) instead of yellow.
  • Chisame Hasegawa's hair is now brown(the original color) instead of green.
  • Satsuki Yotsuba appears slightly slimmer.
  • Chachamaru wears purple stockings on her legs that cover up her leg joints.
  • Chiu( Chisame's net idol personality)'s hair color is now pink instead of brown.
  • Takahata's glasses are slightly different, the frame surrounds the whole lense rather than just the bottom and the sides, and his hair is much more white.
  • Despite being so-called identical twins, Fumika has blue-green eyes while her sister Fuka has brown.
  • Nodoka's hair style is far more different than from the manga or 1st anime series, although it is still in the same basic shape. Her hair also looks a lot more "fluffier" compaired to her "flatter" hair in the manga and 1st anime.

New Characters

Mouya
File:Necat.jpg
Shichimi
  • Shichimi and Mouya. Two "agents" from the Magic Academy sent with a report about the Star Crystals' disappearance. Their true forms are unknown since they took the images drawn up by Haruna; Shichimi is a cat, and Mouya is a frog-cat. From their arrival and on, they stay with Negi and keep a close eye on him to ensure his secret is not revealed. In times that his students discover his magic, they threaten tell him he'll have to go back to the Magic Academy, get his powers taken away and become an animal. But Chamo always gives them the same excuse, them the girls are his "partners", and soon after they eventually are. In more recent episodes, there has been a couple of bizarre segments involving Mouya and Makie, with Makie actually referring to Mouya as "father", And also cut scenes with them playing with Tissue Paper and Bubblewrap.

Missing Characters

  • Shizuna Minamoto has yet to make an appearance in the series

Voice Cast

With a few exceptions, the cast of Negima!? is the same from the original series.

Other

File:Neopactio.jpg
Asuna's three Pactio Cards, Armor (left), Suka (middle) and Cosplay (right)
  • Classroom resembles a University lecture hall instead of a standard public school classroom.
  • Pactio Cards are now split into three types: Armor, Cosplay, and Miss (Suka). Power level changes depending on the card. Armor cards are the most powerful, while the Suka cards are practically useless.
  • Each Pactio Card (Armor, Cosplay, and Suka.), dresses the partner in a kind of costume. The Suka card gives them an animal costume and they become chibi.
  • Transforming can only be done through an activation spell by Negi. A card is chosen at random.
  • Kissing on the cheek/forehead does not create a miss card and has no effect.
  • Spells consist of a key incantation (eg Negi's "Rastel Maskir Magister" and Eva's "Lic Lac La Lac Lilac..."), then the actual spell is invoked in japanese and seems to involve calling upon some spirit. There is then a closing incantation to release the spell (eg. Negi's "Tel ma Amoris!" and Eva's "Lic lac Spiritus!")
  • The battle between Evangeline and the Thousand Master ended in real magical combat rather than the Thousand Master's pitfall trap in the manga.
  • Not only were Negi and Nodoka both aware of what they were doing when Nodoka made her Pactio, but also the Pactio kiss was a regular one, instead of an accidental kiss that happened in the manga.
  • The order of Setsuna and Konoka's Pactios are switched, with Konoka making her Pactio before Setsuna's in the SHAFT version.
  • All of the girls whom they're staying with is revealed in Episode 7:
    • Chizuru Naba is staying with Natsumi Murakami (without Ayaka Yukihiro in the manga)
    • Asuna Kagurazaka is staying with Konoka Konoe (with Negi as their roommate)
    • Ayaka Yukihiro is now staying with Makie Sasaki
    • Nodoka Miyazaki is staying with Yue Ayase
    • Haruna Saotome is staying with Kū Fei
    • Chao Lingshen is staying with Satsuki Yotsuba
    • Misora Kasuga is staying with Akira Okochi
    • Kaede Nagase is staying with Setsuna Sakurazaki
    • The Narutaki Twins are staying with each other
    • Chisame Hasegawa , Satomi Hakase and Kazumi Asakura are staying alone
    • The cheerleaders (Misa Kakizaki, Madoka Kugimiya and Sakurako Shiina) are staying together
    • Mana Tatsumiya is staying together with Zazie Rainyday
    • Ako Izumi is staying with Yuna Akashi
    • Chachamaru Karakuri is staying together with Evangeline
    • Sayo does not have a room and wanders around by herself
  • In order to make Sayo visible, Evangeline cast a spell on her to allow her to be seen through a camera or any other electronical device, even though Sayo could already possess computers and allow herself to be seen as in the "Wintermute" incident in Episode 7.
  • Unlike the original manga, the Narutaki twins learnt of Negi's secret and formed separate pactios with him.
  • It is noted that Kaede discovering Negi's secret is told in nearly the same fashion as in the Akamatsu manga; the difference, however, is that Kaede is more open in telling Negi she knows his secret (instead of keeping it silent from Negi himself), and she also forms a pactio with him.
  • Whereas the girls' magic training in the manga was the result of both Konoka's grandfather wanting her to start learning magic and Yue and Nodoka wanting to learn magic in hopes of helping Negi defeat a dragon that they confronted in Library Island, Negi starts teaching girls magic in the new series after they have their second meeting with the mysterious Baron Black Rose during a camping trip.

Ending Shorts

After the credits every episode there is a small short that has nothing or little to do with the episode. Episodes 1 thru 3 had the Bakarangers, and 4 to 6 dealt with the Chupacabra that Asuna keeps on talking about. By Episode 7 they returned to the Bakaranger shorts.

  • Mahora Sentai Baka Rangers

The first short has to do with the Mahora Sentai Baka Rangers, it is a parody of the tokusatsu series Super Sentai.

There are five main Baka Rangers; Asuna is Baka Red, Kaede is Baka Blue, Yue is Baka Black, Kū Fei is Baka Yellow, and Makie is Baka Pink. They have their own title card, which parodies the sentai series Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan, and have their own theme song. They follow their own color cordination with the letter of their first name across the top half. They also have scarves like the original Super Sentai groups.

After the first episode, they use the actual Super Sentai poses. Asuna, Kaede, and Ku Fei take poses from also from Sun Vulcan. Makie and Yue copy poses from Denshi Sentai Denjiman. Also in the first episode, the Baka Rangers copy the finishing roll call pose from Battle Fever J (When they first shout out "Mahora Sentai Bakaranger!"). In the second episode, they do a different roll call start. They once again take a pose from Sun Vulcan by jumping in front of a sun while covered in shadow. In the third episode, Makie is crushed by a robot before she could finish her roll call. A running gag involves Makie/Baka Pink never finishing her roll call. In Episode seven, Makie/Baka Pink wakes up from bed and has a short conversation with her super computer. Makie also has her face covered with a Tengu mask in the Openings sung by Akaya, Ku, and herself.

  • Chupacabra

Episode 4 thru 6 had to do with the Mexican Chupacabra that Asuna believes roams the Mahora Campus.

  • Arcade Fighter

Satomi creates some sort of special arm that it is unbeatable called Super Power Hand for Chao. When she tries it on, Kū Fei comes out (As Kū LaoZi, or Old Master Ku) and a timer , health bar, and a power bar appear like in fighting games just like Street Fighter. Chao 'charges up' like when a fighter charges their special attack and punches Kū Fei with the metal arm, and a nikuman (Meat bun) comes out. When Kū Fei caught it, the nikuman absorbed all her energy making her to faint in a instant. A K.O. sign appears on the screen. In the second Fighter, Satomi created a second version of the Super Power Hand. This time it can make 2 nikuman each time.
