Despite often being shown with a playful smile, Mukuro is seemingly apathetic to the suffering of others. Appearing as the series' first antagonist, Mukuro is not averse to disposing of those who get in his way, and is not easily intimidated, usually speaking to others in a very direct and arrogant manner. He cares little for others, and simply considers people to be "toys" or "tools" he can sacrifice in order to get to what he wants. Mukuro, along with Ken and Chikusa, is implied to have a strong dislike for the entire Mafia underground, possibly due in part to the experimentations he suffered as a child. However, not only does he want to take revenge on the Mafia by destroying it, he also wants to take over the world, then invoke world suffering by starting a world war, claiming to want to cleanse the world of its filth. Even after becoming the Vongola's Mist Guardian, Mukuro still claims to no longer be part of the Mafia, having been exiled from it, and continues to view the organization with great contempt, though he now prefers to avoid any involvement with them. Mukuro is also quite knowledgeable of the Mafia's dark secrets, possibly even the secret behind the Arcobaleno, a group of the Mafia's most powerful infant hitmen.

Weapons and abilities
Known as someone who has driven both the Mafia and police into the most dangerous and desperate of situations, Mukuro is a formidable and deadly opponent.

Though Mukuro's main weapon is a trident, which he always carries with him, he is first and foremost a master of illusions; he can even overpower an Arcobaleno in a battle of its use, albeit Mukuro is also able to use combative skills. Being a skillful user of illusions, he is not easily deceived by illusions that are cast by others, possessing a highly perceptive mind.

He acquired his skills by having followed the ways of the "Six Paths of Reincarnation", which has been carved into his memories, possibly due to the experiments he underwent as a child. He claims that his body has gone through all six paths to Hades, granting him six powerful skills. When using his skills, a Japanese numeral, corresponding to the realm he has entered, appears in his right eye:

*Second ("二" represents the number two) is the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, which grants him the power to use the skills of others; when he controls a person's body, he is able to perfectly perform their signature attacks.

*Fifth ("五" is five) is the Realm of Humans, which increases his battle aura, thus his strength; it is considered to be the most dangerous of the Six Realms; when Mukuro first enters the realm, he physically pierces his right eye, and a type of aura, resembling the Dying Will Flame, then surrounds Mukuro's entire body, but unlike the Dying Will Flame, Mukuro's aura, in itself, poses no danger, as it just represents Mukuro's fighting spirit.
*Sixth ("六" is six) is the Realm of Heaven, which grants him the power to control others.

Along with his Six Paths of Reincarnation, Mukuro possesses the Estraneo Family's Possession Bullet, which was deemed forbidden by the rest of the Mafia. When shot by the bullet, the person shot will be able to possess the body of another person. Its use requires the user to have a strong will and an affinity for the bullet itself. When shot with the bullet, Mukuro is able to possess and control the body of anyone that he has cut with his trident. == Appearances in other media ==
Besides his appearance in the original manga series and its anime adaptation, Mukuro has appeared in other Reborn! works. In addition to appearing in all of the series' video games, Mukuro appears in the first light novel, Hidden Bullet: Mukuro's Illusions, where the events of how Mukuro took over Kokuyo High are revealed.

Also, in the series' character book, Vongola77, there is a short story of how Mukuro attempts to once again take over Tsuna's body while he is in the Vendicare's jails. In it, though Mukuro is imprisoned in Italy, he is shown to be able to control the body of a small boy in Japan using his spiritual powers, but is unable to use his full powers. Using the boy, he attempts to take over Tsuna's body, but never gets a chance to do so, and because of the unstable "connection" with his host, he was not capable of residing in it for a long amount of time, thus he thought of later taking Chrome's body instead.

Mukuro Rokudo (六道 骸, Rokudō Mukuro) is a fictional character in the Reborn! universe created by Akira Amano. The Reborn! series developed into a media franchise, and consists of an anime, manga, light novels, video games, soundtracks, and other merchandise or collectibles. Portrayed as the series' first primary antagonist, Mukuro Rokudo is introduced as a 15-year-old Mafia criminal who is the leader of the Kokuyo Gang, which consists of heinous criminals whom have recently escaped from prison. However, later on in the series, after possessing the body of Chrome Dokuro, he takes on a more supportive role for the series' main characters, becoming somewhat of an ally rather than an enemy, though he prefers to not want to associate with them.

Mukuro's character has been well-received since his introduction, ranking as the most popular villain in the second official Shonen Jump poll of the Reborn! series,[3] as well as ranking as the series' third most popular male character in the third poll.[4] Also, his and Kyoya Hibari's character CD, entitled "Sakura addiction", peaked at seventh place on the Oricon charts,[5] becoming the most successful soundtrack of the series. Their performance would also earn each of their voice actors a Seiyū Awards' nomination for "Best Musical Performance". In addition, his portrayal as Mukuro Rokudo also lands Toshinobu Iida a "Best Rookie Actor" nomination.[6] However, neither of the voice actors win their nominations.[7]

Profile

Background

As revealed in a flashback sequence, Mukuro Rokudo was born into the Estraneo Family, and was one of the children experimented on by the Estraneos. One day, Mukuro killed his captors with his abilities and offered Chikusa Kakimoto and Ken Joshima, two children who were also experimented on, a chance to join him in his new quest to destroy the "insignificant" world.[8]

Not long after, within the past five years before his first appearance in the story, Mukuro was adopted into a Mafia family in Northern Italy. However, unbeknownst to the family, Mukuro was periodically controlling one of its members, Lancia, and used him to kill others, eventually making him kill his own family. Since then, Mukuro had Lancia under his complete control,[9] using him as a "fake Mukuro" who is eventually mistakenly identified as the real Mukuro in a picture.[10] Whereas, Mukuro is mentioned to have never even been photographed.[9]

He, along with Ken and Chikusa, is later mentioned to have been locked up in a high security Italian prison, which is reserved for the most dangerous of Mafia criminals, who have even committed crimes against the Mafia itself.[11] Two weeks prior to the Kokuyo Gang's appearance in the story, they staged a jailbreak on the eve of Mukuro's execution,[12] resulting in the death of several wardens and prisoners, and later the escape of other dangerous criminals, including Lancia.[11]

Personality

Despite often being shown with a playful smile, Mukuro is seemingly apathetic to the suffering of others. Appearing as the series' first antagonist, Mukuro is not averse to disposing of those who get in his way, and is not easily intimidated, usually speaking to others in a very direct and arrogant manner. He cares little for others, and simply considers people to be "toys"[13] or "tools"[1] he can sacrifice in order to get to what he wants. However, despite claiming that people are just toys, he seems to tolerate both Ken and Chikusa, and even protects them, as well as sacrifice himself for them, when need be, though he does not directly do so in front of them.[14]

Mukuro, along with Ken and Chikusa, is implied to have a strong dislike for the entire Mafia underground, possibly due in part to the experimentations he suffered as a child. However, not only does he want to take revenge on the Mafia by destroying it, he also wants to take over the world, then invoke world suffering by starting a world war, claiming to want to cleanse the world of its filth.[15] Even after becoming the Vongola's Mist Guardian, Mukuro still claims to no longer be part of the Mafia, having been exiled from it,[11] and continues to view the organization with great contempt, though he now prefers to avoid any involvement with them. Mukuro is also quite knowledgeable of the Mafia's dark secrets, possibly even the secret behind the Arcobaleno,[13] a group of the Mafia's most powerful infant hitmen.

Weapons and abilities

Known as someone who has driven both the Mafia and police into the most dangerous and desperate of situations,[12] Mukuro is a formidable and deadly opponent.

He claims that his body has gone through all six paths to Hades, granting him six powerful skills.[13] When using his skills, a Japanese numeral, corresponding to the realm he has entered, appears in his right eye:

 • When the symbol "", representing the number one in Japanese, appears in his eye, it indicates his use of the first realm, the "Realm of Hell", which grants him the power to create illusions.[16]
 • Second ("" represents the number two) is the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, which grants him the power to use the skills of others; when he controls a person's body, he is able to perfectly perform their signature attacks.[17]
 • Third ("" is three) is the Realm of Animals, which grants him the power to summon and control deadly animals.[16]
 • Fourth ("" is four) is the Realm of Asura, which increases his battle skills; when using this skill, a dark flame surrounds his right eye.[13]
 • Fifth ("" is five) is the Realm of Humans, which increases his battle aura, thus his strength; it is considered to be the most dangerous of the Six Realms; when Mukuro first enters the realm, he physically pierces his right eye, and a type of aura, resembling the Dying Will Flame, then surrounds Mukuro's entire body,[18] but unlike the Dying Will Flame, Mukuro's aura, in itself, poses no danger,[15] as it just represents Mukuro's fighting spirit.[18]
 • Sixth ("" is six) is the Realm of Heaven, which grants him the power to control others.[13]

Along with his Six Paths of Reincarnation, Mukuro possesses the Estraneo Family's Possession Bullet, which was deemed forbidden by the rest of the Mafia. When shot by the bullet, the person shot will be able to possess the body of another person. Its use requires the user to have a strong will and an affinity for the bullet itself.[19] When shot with the bullet, Mukuro is able to possess and control the body of anyone that he has cut with his trident. He can possess several bodies simultaneously, and he is also still able to enter the Six Realms, granting him the ability to use a different skill for each body.[19]

Plot overview

After arriving in Japan from Italy, and enrolling in Kokuyo Middle School, ten days prior to their first appearance, Mukuro, Chikusa, and Ken, started a gang made up of Mafia criminals, and began their quest to find the Vongola's tenth generation boss by having his subordinates attack the strongest students in Namimori High, the school Tsuna, the Vongola X, attends.[13] As a result, Mukuro is confronted by Kyoya Hibari, Namimori's strongest student, whom the gang leader beats by using his weakness for sakura trees.[20] During Mukuro's fight with Tsuna, Hibari intervenes and severely injures him,[16] leading him to resort to possessing and controlling Tsuna's friends' bodies. He plans on taking over Tsuna's body in order to take revenge on the Mafia.[19] However, even after returning to his own body,[18] he loses the battle to Tsuna and has his evil aura purified by Tsuna's flame.[15] He and his friends are then dragged away[8] and imprisoned by the Vendicare.[14]

Future Mukuro

They later attempt a breakout, but Mukuro, who used himself as bait, ends up being thrown into a lower level jail cell.[14] Whilst strolling in his illusions, he came upon Chrome Dokuro, who was on the verge of death, and possesses her, saving her life with illusionary organs,[21] as well as intertwining their existence in the process; one can not exist without the other.[14] He then made a bargain with the Vongolas to become one of the ring guardians in exchange for his comrades' safety, though claims that he only did so to once again try to take over Tsuna's body.[22] Now residing within Chrome, Mukuro later appears from within her in order to help her defeat Mammon when she is unable to do so herself.[23]

In the story's alternate future (nearly ten years later), an adult Mukuro was presumed dead by Millefiore hitman Glo Xinia, who prided this when fighting against a displaced Chrome,[24] who had been transported into the future by the Ten-Year Bazooka. However, the future Mukuro apparently possessed Glo's owl and helps Chrome defeat him.[25]

He is apparently spying on the Millefiore Family, but ends up engaging Byakuran in battle after the latter reveals that he has always known. Mukuro, along with getting severely wounded in the fight, is prevented from leaving his current body due to the room's special shielding,[26] leaving his fate unknown. Before his battle, he was able to transmit information about the Millefiore's base to adult Hibari's hideout.[27]According to Chrome, Mukuro, with the last of his strength, tried to show her valuable information.[28]

Appearances in other media

Besides his appearance in the original manga series and its anime adaptation, Mukuro has appeared in other Reborn! works. In addition to appearing in all of the series' video games,[29] Mukuro appears in the first light novel, Hidden Bullet: Mukuro's Illusions, where the events of how Mukuro took over Kokuyo High are revealed.[30]

Using the boy, he attempts to take over Tsuna's body, but never gets a chance to do so, and because of the unstable "connection" with his host, he was not capable of residing in it for a long amount of time, thus he thought of later taking Chrome's body instead.[1]

Reception

Mukuro has been highly popular with the Reborn! reader base, having ranked as the most popular villain in the second official Shonen Jump poll of the series, which was divided into heroes and villains.[3] In the third poll of the series, Mukuro ranked as the third most popular male character, losing to Tsunayoshi Sawada and Kyoya Hibari, who took second and first place, respectively.[4] A plethora of merchandise have been released in Mukuro's likeness including key chains,[31] plush dolls,[32] and action figures.[33]

On November 7 2007, a character CD entitled "Sakura addiction", featuring Mukuro and Hibari, was released, and became the most successful Reborn! character CD, debuting in ninth place in the Oricon charts.[34] The single reached its peak at seventh place,[5][35] but remained in the chart's Top 40 till mid-January of 2008.[36] It contains duets and individual songs sung by both voice actors: Toshinobu Iida and Takashi Kondō. There are two available covers; both show one character as the main feature, with the other shown in the background with his back turned.[37][38] The song "Sakura addiction", which was a duet sung by both voice actors, was used as the fifth ending theme for the series.

For the second annual Seiyū Awards, Toshinobu Iida and Takashi Kondō each received a nomination for "Best Musical Performance", for their music theme "Sakura addiction". Toshinobu also received a "Best Rookie Actor" nomination for his portrayal as Mukuro Rokudo.[6] However, neither of the voice actors win their nominations.[7]
