B-side"Androgynous Girls"

"Love Machine" was second single from Girls Aloud's second album What Will the Neighbours Say?. It charted at #2 in the UK in September of 2004. It was also their first single on the UK download chart, managing to reach #6. In December 2006, it was claimed by a Nokia report to be the second most 'exhilarating' song ever, after Song 2 by Blur.[1]

Release information

An early demo of "Love Machine" was included on the Popjustice compilation album Popjustice: 100% Solid Pop Music; this version was sung by Cheryl Cole and Nadine Coyle and features radically different lyrics from the released versions, even excluding the phrase "Love Machine".

The video for "Love Machine" takes place in the fictitious Eskimo Club, a nightclub which the band members, dressed for a night on the town, enter.

Though Cheryl initially sets her eye on a musician at the club, the girls make their way to a table. However, they are soon distracted by the men in the Eskimo Club and the tricks they pull to try to get the girls' attention.

In a separate setting of a dark background and flashing lights, the girls begin to dance, and eventually they release their inhibitions and begin dancing in the Eskimo Club as well. At the end of the video the girls walk out of the club tired and barefoot.

Other Notes

On the Chemistry Tour just before the second chorus of the song, there was an interlude. The girls sang "1 Thing" by Amerie. After the interlude the girls carried on from where they left off in the song.

On the The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits Tour, in which the girls peformed the Big Band version, the theme was present throughout the whole set. The performance included another breakdown which featured Cheryl disrupting the routine by taking a swig of Champagne.

The band have since found the hit has become a favourite of their fans who "chant for 'Love Machine'"; now they "[shrug] off requests with an effortlessly breezy 'not a chance'".[2] However their earlier responses to these requests had caused controversy, lead singer Alex Turner telling fans at the Sheffield Octagon:

Is that all you like us for? Fuck off, we can’t remember how to play it.[3]

The song has also been covered by singer Tiffany and on Comic Relief does Fame Academy by Blue Peter presenter Zöe Salmon, and musical group A2M.
