Dear 2fJ - Following on from your RfA (best wishes for next time round, btw, and I hope you found the comments and suggestions useful) - one user mentioned that your User Page is being used as a blog, and indeed it does read just like one - and in your first para you put that you're not sure as to how they are done. So I thought I'd come by and pass on the Wikipedia Way (and why it matters!) Hope ya don't mind. So. Wikipedia being what it is - where the aim of every edit is to support the mainspace - such userpages are a bit frowned-on. WP:NOTMYSPACE has the policies and you can always ask around (the regular crowd at WP:RfA are pretty well clued up) for suggestions etc. One of the reasons for the policy is that the personal opinion/beliefs stuff - like making pointed political comments - could (and all too often does) cause unintended problems in the future, particularly with perceptions of neutrality. Especially if you wish to consider standing for adminship again.

If you would like help to design a user page, the best bet is to contact the editor of one you admire and ask if you could be "inspired" by it (always ask rather than just going ahead and copying). Mine is a just a regular example of a plain-and-simple page giving basic information on what I do and where I'm from. You'll have already seen there are numerous userboxes to choose from but its considered wisest to keep them to a minimum: only illustrating info that points to areas of particular knowledge and interest relevant to editing Wikipedia...(so why do I have one of my football team? The point is that "Interests Boxes" are fine in proportion - and that while I like football and know something about it, I don't edit their page because of the afforementioned bias perception issues!). The policy objections come in on the sort of userpage that, for e.g., scrolls down a column of 3 dozen userboxes on preferred snacks and beverages.

Fairly or not, candidates for adminship can find themselves "judged" on these 'social' userpage issues too; where they are perceived to violate the guidelines by decorating it with extraneous personal and irrelevant-to-the-project detail: in other words, are more taken up with socializing and/or expressing personal viewpoints.

Anyway, this is only a basic outline of the general area but I hope its been of some help. Anything you wanna sort out, ask away (I'm no wiki expert but I'll pass you on to one if necessary!) Systemic bias is a harsh mistress

For example, "football" is not really that pertinent for billions of people and is rather US-centric. Thanks. El_C 17:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should try keeping the intro purely definitional. If anything, I think it should aim to do what the Columbia Encyclopedia does in its chavinism entry, when it writes in its intro that: "...Lately, though, the compounds male chauvinism and male chauvinist have gained so much popularity that some users may no longer recall the patriotic and other more generalized meanings of the words."[1] As I argue on my talk page at greater length, it this sort of definitional, concise direction that I feel our intro should take, with examples being limited to the body. Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks again. El_C 00:03, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Ernst Ludwig von Gerlach, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9036552/Ludwig-von-Gerlach. This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. Infinite diversity in infinite combination

Please respect and follow the customs here with regard to varieties of use of English. Specifically: when an article is initially created in U.S. or British English, about a topic which is not peculiar to a specific dialect region, we leave it that way. Thus in frog, and orange (colour), British spelling prevails; in color and green, U.S. spelling; because that's the way they happen to have been created. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:11, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you are interested, please join the task force here. We sure could use your help. Thanks.U5K0 (talk) 19:32, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Message from Sander

Hello I just read this. I did some minor changes on wikipedia, but i think I just do it not right. I was interested in you as a member of San Marino wiki. Could you email me on sander777777@hotmail.com because a couple of times I already changed that San Marino was NOT neutral in World War 2 (nor world War 1) both with rather good backing. But somebody keeps changing it back to SM; neutral country. And i just do bot know enough of Wiki how to do something about it. If you are interested: snd me an email, and I will send you the articles and links to back it up. best regards, Sander

Your RFA

I'm sorry to inform you that I have closed your RFA per WP:NOTNOW. It looks like those who commented there think you are heading in the right direction, but some more time and experience is needed. There are some excellent suggestions given on your RFA, so hopefully following them will give you more luck in a future RFA, should you attempt another. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask me. Useight (talk) 01:34, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RFA advice

Thank you for submitting your RFA. While I applaud enthusiasm, I'm afraid you do not yet possess sufficient knowledge/experience for the community to have confidence in your readiness to become an admin. You may find the following advice helpful. If you have not done so already, please read

Generally, It has been my experience that it takes at least 3,000 edits in a variety of areas to learn policy and guidelines well enough to attempt adminship. Also, nominees returning after an unsuccessful RfA should wait at least another 3,000 edits and 3 months before trying again. Nominees need to show the ability to contribute a number of significant edits to build the encyclopedia.
 • The Admin tools allow the user to block and unblock other editors, delete and undelete pages and protect and unprotect pages. Nominees will therefore do well to gain experience and familiarity with such areas as WP:AIV, WP:AFD, WP:CSD, Wikipedia:Protection policy, and WP:BLOCK to learn when to do these things.
 • Adminship inevitably leads one to 1) need to explain clearly the reasons for one's decisions, 2) need to review one's decisions and change one's mind when it is reasonable to do so, 3) need to review one's decisions and stand firm when it is reasonable to do so, 4) need to negotiate a compromise. Admins need a familiarity with dispute resolution. The ability to communicate clearly is essential.
 • Article building is the raison d'être of Wikipedia. I recommend significant participation in WP:GA or WP:FA as the surest way to gain article building experience. Alternatively, one should have added a total of 30,000 bytes of content, not necessarily all in one article. I find a large number of "Wikignome" type edits to be helpful.
 • My suggestion would be to try again in another 3 months and 3000 edits. I recommend taking part in RfA discussions to help learn from the experiences of others. Many nominees have found it helpful to obtain an Editor Review or to receive Admin coaching before submitting their RfA. Hope this helps. Good luck and happy editing.
