Stockinish Island
Stockinish Island (Scottish Gaelic: "Eilean Stocainis") is one of the Outer Hebrides. It is just to the south east of Harris on the edge of the Minch, in Loch Stockinish. It is 49 ha in size, and 44 metres at its highest point. [1]
It is uninhabited and is now used for grazing.
Geography and geology
Eilean Stocainis' geology is Lewisian gneiss.
To the south west is the small Eilean Leasait, and Stac nam Faoileag (seagull stack) is just to the south. There are a number of reefs to the south, which are above water at low tide.
Loch an t-Sàile (loch of the brine) takes up much of the island. It is an artificially dammed saltwater loch, probably formerly a fish trap, and now used as a lobster pond.[1]
It has two kyles (straits) to the north and south, namely Caolas Beag to the north east and Caolas Mòr to the south west.
