(16438) Knöfel is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on January 11, 1989 by Freimut Börngen at the observatory of the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg .
The celestial body was named after the German meteorologist and amateur astronomer André Knöfel (* 1963), who works for the German Weather Service (DWD) at the Lindenberg Meteorological Observatory .
