(3538) Nelsonia is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels as part of the Palomar-Leiden Survey .
The asteroid was named after Elisabeth Nelson, a former secretary of the State Observatory in Heidelberg-Königstuhl and the Heidelberg Max Planck Institute for Astronomy , who was involved in evaluating the photo plates of the Palomar-Leiden Survey.
