(4867) Polites was discovered on September 27, 1989 by the American astronomer Carolyn Jean Spellmann Shoemaker . It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L5.

The asteroid is named after Polites , the son of Priam and Hecabe , who was killed during the destruction of Troy .
