(8977) paludicola is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 29 September 1973 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California was discovered.

The asteroid was named after the scientific name Acrocephalus paludicola for the reed warbler .
