Ángel Rama

Ángel Rama (born April 30, 1926 in Montevideo , † November 27, 1983 in Madrid ) was a Uruguayan writer, Romanist and Hispanist of Spanish descent, who also had Venezuelan and Colombian citizenship.

life and work

Rama studied Spanish American and European literature from 1947 to 1950 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Montevideo and from 1948 to 1949 education at the Sección Agregaturas del Consejo de Enseñanza Secundaria . From 1952 to 1966 he then worked as a lecturer at the Montevidean Instituto Alfredo Vázquez Acevedo and was a teacher at the Liceo Francés from 1952 to 1964. In the meantime, his life path also took him to Paris . There followed from 1955 to 1956 further studies at the Collège de France . In his second year in Paris he also worked as a teacher at the Ecole de Sevres. From 1963 to 1966 he taught theater history at the Instituto de Arte Dramático in the Uruguayan capital. In 1966 he became professor for Hispanic American literature at the humanities and social sciences faculty at the Universidad de la República and held this position until 1970. Subsequently, he was director of the department for Hispanic American literature at the faculty. At the same time he was also active as a journalist. Among other things, he was co-director of the university magazine Clinamen from 1947 to 1949 and director of the literary section of the weekly Marcha from 1958 to 1968 . He also worked in the National Library of Montevideo . In 1973 he went into exile in Venezuela , where he acquired Venezuelan citizenship in 1977 as a replacement for the lost Uruguayan one. From 1979 to 1982 he taught as a visiting professor a. a. at Princeton University , from 1981 to 1982 at the University of Maryland, College Park , but had to leave the United States again because the visa was not renewed. He went to Paris, obtained Colombian citizenship through Belisario Betancur and died on the way to Colombia (together with his second wife Marta Traba ) in an air disaster ( Avianca flight 011 ). As a writer, Rama belonged to the Generación del 45 .

In 1985 the Fundación Ángel Rama was founded in Montevideo. A research center was named after him at the University of São Paulo .
