Áramótaskaup

Áramótaskaup (Eng. "New Year's Comedy") is a television program on the Icelandic television station RÚV , which is broadcast annually on the New Year. It was initially broadcast on the radio from 1948 to 1965 and has been on television since the public television broadcaster was founded in 1966. The program consists of several comedy sketches and songs that parody the political and cultural developments in Iceland over the past year.

Some of the most famous Icelandic comedians and actors are regularly on the show, including Jón Gnarr , Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir and Steindinn okkar . Well-known directors in Iceland directed Áramótaskaupið , such as Hrafn Gunnlaugsson , Ágúst Guðmundsson and Þórhildur Þorleifsdóttir .

The show received the highest ratings on Icelandic television. In 2002 the show reached a record of 95.5% of all views; Páll Magnússon , General Director of RÚV 2005–2013, stated in 2007 that this was probably a world record in the western world. Advertisements relating to the program are the most expensive of the year; a 30-second advertisement cost about 350,000 crowns in 2003. Since then, the audience rating for the show has been falling steadily. In 2013 the program received a rate of 77%.

During its hour-long airtime, “the streets are completely silent,” according to Reykjavík Grapevine . The program is traditionally seen mainly in the family circle.
