Älvkarleby is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Uppsala län and the historic province of Uppland . The main town of the municipality is Skutskär .
geography
The river Dalälven flows through the municipality and finally flows into the Gulf of Bothnia ( Baltic Sea ) in the main town of Skutskär .
history
Due to the post-glacial uplift , the area of the municipality slowly rose out of the water after the last ice age. From around 1000 BC The oldest evidence of settlements is also dated to the 4th century BC. Traditionally, people's lives have been shaped by fishing.
In the younger Iron Age (6th to 7th centuries) the population began to grow.
The municipality is one of the few whose area was not affected by the two territorial reforms in the 20th century. It thus continues to cover the area that corresponded to the parish ( socks ) at the time when the community was established on January 1, 1863 .
In memory of the author Stig Dagerman , the Stig Dagerman Prize, endowed with 50,000 SEK , is awarded every year on Laxön in Älvkarleby.
economy
The largest employers are the municipality itself and the paper manufacturing company Stora Enso ; both have their municipal headquarters in Skutskär. In Älvkarleby , the second largest town , a company for hydropower research does research.
