Åbo IFK - Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna i Åbo , German "Sports club comrades from Åbo" - is a Finnish sports club from Turku , Swedish Åbo .

history

The association was founded in 1908 by the Turku-based Swedish ethnic group, which at that time was much stronger than the current 5%. In the early days of Finnish football, ÅIFK was one of the most important clubs in the country and won three Finnish championships in a total of eight finals by 1924.

When in 1930 with the Mestaruussarja , today known as Veikkausliiga , a national first division was established in Finland, ÅIFK was a founding member, but was relegated after the first year. After the immediate resurgence, the club was able to hold up again between 1932 and 1935.

In the 1960s, ÅIFK experienced a new small heyday and was again first class between 1963 and 1965 and 1967. In 1965, the club also won, for the only time so far, the Finnish Cup , which has been held since 1955 , when it defeated local rivals Turun Palloseura , also known as TPS, 1-0 in the final , who is close to the Finnish ethnic group . This allowed the club to take part in a European club competition so far. In the 1966/67 European Cup Winners' Cup , ÅIFK was eliminated in the first round against Servette Geneva .

In the 1990s, the ÅIFK football team acted as the TPS reserve team for a short time. After Åbo IFK was last second class in 2000, the club has fluctuated between the third and fourth division since then.

Stadion

ÅIFK Turku is currently playing on Yläkenttä, not far from Paavo Nurmi Stadium .

The attendance record for a home game by ÅIFK dates back to 1967, when 5,861 spectators followed the game against local rivals TPS. At that time, however, they played in the Kupittaan jalkapallostadion (today: Veritas Stadium ).
