Edouard Barbey

Édouard Barbey (born September 2, 1831 in Béziers , † March 26, 1905 in Paris ) was a French politician.

Life

After Edouard Barbey graduated from the Naval School in Brest , he took part in various expeditions as a naval officer. In 1862 he retired with the rank of lieutenant captain and ran his father's spinning mills in Mazamet until 1870 . After the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War he was given an artillery command in the Paris forts on the left bank of the Seine . After the peace, Mazamet elected him Mayor and General Councilor in 1871, in which capacity he fought the Bonapartist candidate. In 1882 he became Senator for Tarn and took his seat on the Republican Left. He was particularly involved in the debates on the Municipal Act, Elementary Schools Act and the Navy budget, on which he repeatedly reported. From May 30th to December 12th, 1887, he held the portfolio of the navy and the colonies in the Rouvier Ministry . He later took over again after the resignation of the Minister of the Navy Krantz on November 10, 1889 in the Tirard cabinet and in 1890 went to the Freycinet Ministry , with which he resigned on February 19, 1892. Then he returned to the Senate and became President of the Naval Commission in 1893 and President of the Finance Commission in 1896, both of which he held until 1901. 1901-04 he was Vice President of the Senate.
