Édouard Ganche [edwaʁ ɡɑ̃ːʃ] (born October 13, 1880 in Baulon , Département Ille-et-Vilaine , † March 31, 1945 in Lyon ) was a French musicologist, writer and editor. He has made a particular contribution to researching the life and work of Frédéric Chopin .

Life

He was born as the son of the doctor Auguste Ganche (1850-1893) in the small town of Baulon and was strongly influenced by the early death of his father. In 1909 he published a collection of macabre stories called Le Livre de la mort ( The Book of Death ). He initially studied medicine, but eventually devoted himself entirely to music and became one of Frédéric Chopin's leading experts .

In 1911 he founded with Maurice Ravel and Camille Le Senne in Paris the Société Chopin à Paris . His edition of Chopin's works, which he developed on the basis of a collection of French first editions compiled by Jane Stirling , appeared in Oxford University Press from 1928 to 1932 . In 1928 he acted as historical advisor to the Chopin film La Valse de l'adieu by director Henry Roussel .

His extensive collection of original scores, letters and objects related to Chopin's life and work was sold against his will in 1942 in Germany-occupied Poland and is now in the Biblioteka Jagiellońska in Krakow . His private archive came to the Bibliothèque nationale de France .
