Édouard Montagne (born August 18, 1830 in Paris , † April 30, 1899 ibid) was a French author, librettist and journalist.

biography

Montagne was the son of a householder at a boarding school. Nothing is known about his training himself, but he pursued a career in the public service. Montagne worked in the commercial department of the Hôpital Cochin , the boucherie centrale des hôpitaux and the Hôpital Saint-Antoine , where he had gradually worked his way up to director. From the mid-1850s, Montagne wrote vaudevilles , comedies and also militaristic pieces on a part-time basis, which were performed in the most famous theaters in Paris, such as the Opéra-Comique , the Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique , the Théâtre du Palais-Royal and the Théâtre des Délassements – Comiques was premiered.

In 1877 Montagne retired, while maintaining the management of the Hôpital Saint-Antoine and largely withdrew as a librettist. Now he wrote a number of novels and some non-fiction books. He was also very busy as a journalist and editor at the Mémorial Diplomatique magazine . Montagne was also a founding member of the Association des Journalistes Parisiens, founded in 1885 .

Surprisingly, Montagne, together with the young Georges Hüe , won the Concours Crescent in 1879 for his Opéra-comique Les Pantines .

In 1886 he was first elected as a delegate of the Société de Gens de lettres and also won the annual re-election until his retirement in 1898.

Only one son of Montagnes is known, who was killed by a tiger near Nha Trang in 1896 . Montagne was so badly affected that he refused any condolences and a funeral procession to the family grave on the Père Lachaise .

Montagne died, highly decorated among other things with the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur and the officier de l'Instruction publique , at the age of 69 after a long illness.
