Edouard de Verneuil
Philippe Édouard Poulletier de Verneuil (born February 13, 1805 in Paris , † May 29, 1873 ibid) was a French geologist and paleontologist .
Life
De Verneuil studied law, but was able to follow his scientific interests due to financial independence and attended lectures in geology by Léonce Élie de Beaumont . He undertook geological exploratory trips to Russia and the Crimea (published 1837), examined the Paleozoic Era (especially Devonian) of Pas-de-Calais and the Rhenish Slate Mountains and in Belgium, where he accompanied Roderick Impey Murchison and Adam Sedgwick in 1839. In addition, he accompanied Murchison on his trip to Russia (published 1845) and then he studied paleozoic strata in the USA (published in Bull. Soc. Geol. France 1847) and set up a geological map of Spain and Portugal with Edouard Collomb (published 1864).
Honors
In 1854 he was accepted into the Académie des sciences and in 1846 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1853 he was awarded the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society of London , and in 1860 he was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society . From 1856 he was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor , holder of the Grand Cross of the Order de Isabel la Católica , Commander of the Order of St. Vladimir and the Russian Order of St. Anne , Commander of the Order of Charles III. and officer of the Brazilian Order of the Rose . He was three times President of the French Geological Society (1840, 1853, 1867). Édouard de Verneuil was a member of the Society of German Naturalists and Doctors .
