biography

Born in Brest, he did not grow up speaking Breton, but acquired the language later in life. He received two degrees (philosophy and English) and moved to Paris. He was associated with several radical movements of the time: Dreyfus Affair , anarchism , collectivism , anti-militarism . At this time he became friends with Élisée Reclus , Kropotkin and Romain Rolland . He attended the universitaire populaires (1899-1905). On his return to Brittany , he became a teacher in English at the Pontivy high school . He translated numerous works by Thomas Carlyle into French.

In 1911 he became vice president of the literary section of the Breton Regionalist Union . In the same year he was one of the founders of the Breton Nationalist Party and editor of the magazine Breiz Dishual ("Free Brittany"). In 1913 he was the founder of the Brug magazine , an anarchist magazine in the Breton language. At that time he defined himself as a libertarian socialist. A keen internationalist, he tried to reconcile this aspect of his thinking with his Breton nationalism.
