Émilien Cabuchet (* 1819 in Bourg-en-Bresse , † February 24, 1902 in Bourg-en-Bresse) was a French sculptor. He mainly created statues of religious personalities and often achieved great emotional expressiveness.

Cabuchet came from a long -established family of lawyers and doctors in the Bresse . After attending Jesuit schools in Chambéry and Spain, he studied drawing at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon . However, his interest was in sculpture . He therefore continued his studies with Pierre Charles Simart in Paris and completed them in Rome . In 1877 he married Marguerite de Fresquet. The marriage had four children.

Cabuchet was deeply religious. In Rome he had his tools blessed by the Pope. He became famous for the depictions of Jesus of the Sacred Heart and the crowned Mother of God , both in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Lourdes , and of St. Vincent de Paul in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne .

His most important work, the statue of the later canonized pastor by Ars Jean-Marie Vianney , has its own genesis. Vianney had become famous for his self-sacrificing and charismatic work. The demand for pictures of him was great. However, the pastor was not ready to sit as a model for a painter or photographer. He called the portraits of him that were created his carnival . In 1858 a confrere asked Vianney Cabuchet to come to Ars and design a bust. Cabuchet came with an episcopal letter of recommendation. Still, Vianney turned him down. Cabuchet then secretly formed a wax model in the church over a period of eight days, which he finally showed the pastor. He accepted it with the words: Yes, this is not a carnival . On the basis of the wax model, Cabuchet created the statue after Vianney's death, which is now in the new candle chapel in Ars. It depicts the saint in priestly choir clothing, kneeling in prayer in front of the tabernacle . The ascetically emaciated face shows a unique mixture of self-forgotten devotion and serenity.
