Éric Péan (born September 10, 1963 in Alençon ) is a former French football player .

Career

Péan, who stood out as a defensive player primarily through his physical strength, was trained as a youth player at OSC Lille and played for several French youth national teams, most recently for the U-23. On March 28, 1981, he ran for Lille in an encounter against OGC Nice at the age of 17 for the first time in the top French league. This was followed by sporadic missions until he was able to fight for a regular place at the beginning of the 1981/82 season when he was just 18 years old. Over time, he became the head of the defensive department in a team that found itself mostly close to the relegation ranks, but was able to keep itself consistently in the league. He remained unchallenged until his contract expired in 1987 and he decided to move to league rivals Girondins Bordeaux .

At Bordeaux he had Zoran Vujović , Alain Roche and Didier Sénac as rivals in the battle for the regular places in the defense, but was usually allowed to play from the start himself. For Bordeaux, Péan, who never made it to the French senior team, appeared a total of nine times in European competition. Because he was not able to assert himself with the south-west French and was always exposed to the strong pressure of the competition, he decided in 1989 to switch to the equally first-class SM Caen . At Caen he was set, but also had considerable competition, especially from Franck Dumas , so he left the club again and signed with the first division club SC Toulon .

In 1992 he moved to the ambitious club Olympique Lyon , which, however, slipped considerably in the 1992/93 season and came close to relegation to the second division. His stay there did not last long either, as he found a new employer in 1993 in the newly promoted SCO Angers . In 1994 he had to accept relegation and at the same time ended his professional career at the age of 30 after 391 first division games with four goals. He went to third division FC Tours , for whom he was on the field until 1996. In the same year he opened a pub in his hometown of Alençon and in 2005 he took over the management of a hotel in Gien . His only son has a former teammate Péans as godfather in Rudi Garcia .
