Étangs de Hollande

The Étangs de Hollande are six lakes in a row in the Yvelines department , created in the second half of the 17th century to supply Fontainen in the park of the Palace of Versailles with the necessary water pressure. The name comes from a castle with a similar name in the immediate vicinity.
geography
The lakes are located in the municipal areas of Saint-Léger-en-Yvelines and Bréviaires . They form a straight band 5.2 km long and about 300 m wide. Together they are a double reservoir, the water level of which is held by two dams at both ends. Some of the crossing dams allow the water level to vary in parts of the chain of lakes, while others are pure bridge dams to connect the north and south banks. The dam crests are 174 m above sea level. Nowadays the water level of the two easternmost lakes is 173 m, maybe only 172.7 m, those of the other lakes are kept at 70.9 m above sea level. As a result, the two middle lakes are no longer completely flooded.
The lakes get their water from lateral tributaries, especially from the Bois de Serqueuse to the north , the highest part of the Forêt de Rambouillet . An aqueduct leads from the easternmost lake to the Park of Versailles. The natural drains go eastwards through the Ru des Vaux ("calf brook") to the Yvette , ie through the Orge above Paris into the Seine , and westwards through the Ruisseau des Ponts Quentin and then the Gropelin , the Vesgre and the Eure below Paris in the Seine.
The names of the lakes are from west to east Grand Étang de Hollande ("Big ..."), Petit Étang de Hollande ("Little ..."), Étang de Bourgneuf , Étang de Corbet , Étang de Pourras and Étang de Saint-Hubert .
history
The planning of the water supply and thus also the construction of the lake ensemble goes back to the legendary planner Sébastien Vauban .
Today's administration of the lakes is the responsibility of the “Syndicat mixte d'aménagement et de gestion des étangs et rigoles” (SMAGER).
Leisure and Tourism
Numerous leisure activities can be pursued around the lakes, e.g. B. Swimming, fishing, hiking. Numerous species of birds can also be observed. The classification as a nature reserve is sought.
