The Île Barbe is an island in the Saône . It has been part of the city of Lyon since 1963 and is located in the north of the 9th arrondissement in the Saint-Rambert quarter . Its Latin name was insula barbara ("wild island").

location

The island, which belongs to the former municipality of Saint-Rambert-l'Île-Barbe , which was incorporated into Lyon in 1963, can be reached via a bridge built in 1827. There are several bus routes.

history

Already in the 5th century a St. Monastery consecrated to Martin von Tours , which at times also bore the name Saint-Loup . After repeated devastation in the years 676, 725 and 945 by Sarrazenen and others, the monastery was rebuilt every time - also because of the support of the bishops of Lyon . Having become Benedictine in the 11th century, it acquired properties in the Dauphiné , Provence , Bresse and Forez .

In 1549 the monastery was secularized; the monks became canons . Devastated in 1562 by the Protestants under the leadership of François de Beaumont, Baron des Adrets , the monastery was closed in 1742 and 1781 - long before the French Revolution .

Of the three medieval churches ( Saint-Loup , Notre-Dame and Sainte-Anne ), only the Notre-Dame church, built in the 11th century but later modified and dedicated to the accommodation of pilgrims , has survived . The ruins of the Saint-Loup church still stand.
