Stefan Georgiev Paprikow ( Bulgarian Стефан Георгиев Паприков ) (born April 12 . Jul / 24. April  1858 greg. In Pirdop , Ottoman Empire , † the 30th May 1920 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian military personnel and politicians. From January 1899 to March 1903 he was Minister of War in five different governments and from January 1908 to September 1910 Foreign Minister of his country in the Malinov government .

Military career

As a young student, Paprikow took part in the uprising of Stara Sagora in 1875 and in the April uprising in 1876. After serving in a volunteer group to support the Russian army during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/78, he attended the newly founded military school in Sofia, which he called in 1879 Sub-lieutenant left. After a short service in the troops, he was delegated from 1880 to 1883 to a course at the Russian Military Academy in Saint Petersburg , where he was promoted to lieutenant in 1882 . He then returned to military service and was deployed as a battalion commander in 1884 . Shortly before the outbreak of the Serbian-Bulgarian war , Paprikow was promoted to captain in 1885. During the war he served as a division's chief of staff . After the war he was appointed major in 1887 and - after a brief period as deputy chief of staff and chief of staff - appointed commander of the military school. In 1891 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and appointed head of the administrative department in the general staff, and in 1895 Paprikow became a colonel . From 1896 to 1899 he was again Chief of Staff, from which office he was appointed Minister of War and in 1900 made Major General.

After retiring as Minister of War, he was initially inspector of the infantry .

Political career

In 1906 Paprikow was appointed Bulgarian diplomatic representative in Russia . In this position he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1908, but recalled that same year to take over the foreign ministry in Sofia. In this function he participated in the attainment of full sovereignty and in the elevation of the Principality of Bulgaria to a kingdom. As a result, the diplomatic post in Saint Petersburg, to which he returned until 1912 after leaving the government, was upgraded to that of Minister Plenipotentiary . He returned from there to take part in the first Balkan War as a Bulgarian liaison officer at the Serbian headquarters .

In 1914 Paprikow was elected a member of the National Assembly for the Democratic Party , of which he was a member until 1919. During the world war he was honorary chairman of the relief association for the soldiers' families.

Remarks

  1. Since the Principality of Bulgaria had to pay tribute to the Ottoman Empire until 1908, this was officially a subordinate diplomatic position. In terms of content, the office corresponded to that of an ambassador today.
