The BBÖ 1570 were electric locomotives of the Austrian Federal Railways BBÖ.

The series BBÖ 1100 / BBÖ 1100.1 locomotives procured for the mountain route of the Arlbergbahn proved their worth. The machines of the BBÖ 1029 series were too weak for the valley sections in Tyrol and Vorarlberg . The BBÖ therefore had its own type of locomotive developed for these routes. There was still no clear solution for the type of drive for electric locomotives. The usual for trams nose-suspended drive was not suitable for higher speeds, the still common, originating from the steam locomotives drive rod drive was due to its implementation of a rotary movement into a translation that has been converted back into a rotating movement, far from optimal. Siemens-Schuckert developed its own vertical drive for the 1570 series , in which the motors directly drive the axes via conical gear wheels. This also made it possible to combine a running axle together with a driven axle in a bogie. The lubrication of the vertically arranged motors had to be constantly monitored, which meant that the locomotives had to be operated by two men. The oil consumption was considerable.

The four locomotives were delivered in 1925, with the mechanical part being built by Krauss in Linz . With this series, Austria introduced the single-axle drive a year before Germany . The machines were stationed in Bludenz , but occasionally also reached Innsbruck with their trains . Despite the complicated drive, the vehicles proved their worth. For many purposes, however, it turned out to be too weak, so further procurement was decided in favor of the somewhat stronger successor series BBÖ 1670 .

The Deutsche Reichsbahn designated the locomotives as E 22. The ÖBB returned to the designation of origin in 1953. All four locomotives were retired by 1978. The 1570.01 came to the collection of the Austrian Railway Museum and is located in the Strasshof Railway Museum .
