The Ecumenical Church Center Kehrsatz

The Ecumenical Church Center St. Andreas in Kehrsatz near Bern was built in 1976 at Mättelistrasse 24 and inaugurated on November 7, 1976. The St. Andrew's Church is shared and used by the Evangelical Reformed parish of Kehrsatz and the Roman Catholic parish. The adjoining rooms also serve as a meeting point and cultural center for the village community.

history

With the growth of the population, the need for independence in church matters arose in Kehrsatz. That is why the Evangelical Reformed parish Kehrsatz was founded on January 1st, 1962. The reformed parish was divided into the upper and lower part and is looked after by two pastors. The Catholics are affiliated with the parish of St. Michael in Wabern and are looked after by their own contact person. At that time the desire for a church of their own arose. Among the villagers at the time, the ecumenical idea was emphasized by both the Reformed and the Catholic side, which led to the decision to build a church together. A church building association with a planning committee decided in favor of the design by the architect Benedikt Huber , who had already built some churches. Construction began in May 1975, and the Kehrsatz Ecumenical Church Center, soon to be known as Öki , was inaugurated on November 5-7 , 1976 . On the foundation stone next to the main entrance there is the biblical saying “May they all be one” ( Jn 17.21  EU ). Both denominations use both the St. Andrew's Church and the Room of Silence for their religious celebrations, often also at joint ecumenical services. In doing so, they maintain their self-imposed ecumenical obligation.
