The Ölbergwerk ( French Usine de Œlberg ) is a hydropower plant in the urban area of Freiburg in Üechtland . It is located on the northern flank of the Mount of Olives, which the Saane flows around as a mountain . Initially, the Mount of Olives was only popularly referred to as such, because a Way of the Cross was set up on it and this reminded of the Jerusalem Mount of Olives . The power plant was built by Entreprises Électriques Fribourgeoises (EEF) and is now, after the merger with Elektrizitätswerke Neuchâtel (ENSA), the main plant of the energy supplier Groupe E.

Since 1870 there has been a dam wall a little above the course of the Saane, in the so-called Magere Au, which ensures a constant water level. Initially, a teledynamic system took care of the energy transmission, but this quickly became obsolete due to technical developments. At the beginning of the 20th century, work began on a puncture under the Mount of Olives. In addition, the dam wall was increased by 2.7 m in 1910. Since then, two 266 and 246 meter long downpipes lead from this dammed Pérolles lake through the Mount of Olives directly to the turbines of the power plant. The difference in altitude is 21 m .

Initially, the power plant was operated with three turbines with a nominal output of 2 MW each 2700. In 1943, at the time of particularly difficult power generation during the Second World War, it was replaced by an electric generator with 7.5  MVA . In 1956 a second, similar machine group was added. During a further modernization in 1980, the system was replaced by turbines with an output of 2.1 MW each. The annual average energy production was thus 51 million kWh .
