Ören is a municipality belonging to Milas County in the Muğla Province in Turkey .

location

Ören is located in a small alluvial plain, which was raised by the river Ören over the centuries, on the north side of the Gulf of Kos (Turkish: Gökova Körfezi ). The bay is bounded by the up to 800 m high foothills of the Menteşe Mountains (German: Hinge Mountains). A poor coastal road connects the town with the provincial capital Muğla , 58 kilometers to the east ; the main road leads to the district town of Milas, about 40 km away, to the north. The place is surrounded by the communities Alatepe in the east, Türkevleri in the west and Çakıralan in the north.

history

Today's place is on the site of ancient ceramics. This settlement existed from the 6th century BC. BC to approx. 300 AD Today you can see ruins of an acropolis , a castle , a bath and several temples and tombs inland .

population

In 2012, almost 3,000 people lived in Ören, although the population has decreased slightly over the past five years. Together with the surrounding villages belonging to the municipality of Ören, the population is approx. 9,000. In the summer months, many Turks use Ören as a second home.

politics

The mayor has been the forest manager Kazım Turan from the CHP since 2004, who was re-elected in 2014. In the last parliamentary elections in 2009, the DSP (Democratic Left Party) received 38%, the AKP (Islamic-Conservative) 36%, and the CHP (Republican People's Party) 25% of the votes.

economy

Since 1990, increasing tourism has become the town's main source of income. In summer up to 30,000 overnight stays are counted. The importance of agriculture (mainly small-scale farming and extensive livestock farming) and fishing has declined sharply. The Kemerköy coal-fired power station has been located west of Ören since 1994.
