Life

Anders Österling graduated from high school in Lund in 1904 and then also studied in Lund. From 1909 to 1919 he was a librarian at Lund University Library , from 1919 he was a full-time journalist and lived in Stockholm. Also in 1919 he was elected a member of the Swedish Academy , whose permanent secretary he was from 1941 to 1964. In this capacity he had a great influence on the choice of the Nobel Prize for Literature .

meaning

In his first collections of poetry, Anders Österling was strongly influenced by German and French. But he soon found his own style: describing nature and people, often based on motifs from his native Skåne , and the change of the seasons as an image of transience. Österling was like his colleague Erik Axel Karlfeldt in that he too made his native landscape the starting point for his poetry. In contrast to Karlfeldt, however, Österling had a more sober, restrained style. His poetry is often about beauty, affirmation of life against the background of dark experiences and human values. His best-known poem Ales stenar from the collection of poems Tonen från havet (1933) describes the famous ship setting Ales stenar by Kåseberga near Ystad in a sensitive and poetic way . Anders Österling belonged to the last generation of poets who began to write before the breakthrough of modernity .

Anders Österling was also an important translator of poetry from English, French, German and Danish. In addition, Anders Österling made a name for himself as a literary critic and cultural journalist.
