The Eastern Sailfin surgeonfish ( Zebrasoma veliferum ) is a kind from the family of surgeonfish (Acanthuridae). It lives in the western tropical Pacific from southern Japan via Indonesia , Micronesia , to Hawaii , the Great Barrier Reef , New Caledonia and the Tuamotu Archipelago and prefers to colonize coral-rich lagoons and outer reefs there. It can be observed in water depths of five to 30 meters. In the Indian Ocean it is replaced by the western sailfin surgeonfish ( Zebrasoma desjardinii ).
features
Like all representatives of the surgeon fish, the eastern sailfin surgeon fish has a laterally flattened body that can reach a length of up to 40 centimeters. Vertical white stripes run on the dark gray-brown colored flanks. The dark zones between the white transverse bands are provided with fine vertical, yellowish bands. The head can be spotted. Its large, sail-shaped dorsal fin is supported by four to five hard rays and 29 to 33 soft rays, the anal fin by three hard rays and 23 to 26 soft rays. Both fins are set up during the demonstration . In solitary and territorial juvenile fish, both fins are particularly high and are later reduced. Adult Eastern Sailfin Surgeonfish live in pairs.
The eastern sailfin surgeonfish has a terminal mouth that is somewhat pointed. It prefers to eat macroalgae that grow on the substrate. Compared to other members of the genus Zebrasoma , it has fewer and larger pharyngeal teeth .
