Özlem Sarıkaya (* 1974 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German television journalist and presenter for Bayerischer Rundfunk .

Live and act

Özlem Sarıkaya was born in Germany as the daughter of Turkish guest workers and grew up partly in Turkey . After graduating from high school, she completed an apprenticeship and then studied political science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. At that time she was already gaining experience as a radio broadcaster and editor at a local private radio station.

In 2003 Sarıkaya started working for Bayerischer Rundfunk, initially as a writer . At the beginning of 2008, she took over the moderation of the intercultural culture magazine puzzle: Many cultures - a country that Sarıkaya redesigned and positioned the broadcaster as the "first intercultural culture magazine on German television" at Bayerischer Fernsehen (BFS) . Sarıkaya sees her TV magazine, which was widely received by television viewers and critics and which attracted considerable media coverage, as a “mediator between cultures”.

As a historical event, Sarıkaya moderated the ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the recruitment agreement with Turkey at Munich Central Station in October 2011. A historical train from Turkey with contemporary witnesses, politicians from Germany and Turkey reminded of the beginnings of immigration. Bayerischer Fernsehen and TRT, Turkey's public broadcaster, broadcast the ceremony live for two hours.

In December 2015, Sarıkaya moderated the ceremony “60 Years of Guest Workers” in the Federal Chancellery, at which Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked the guest workers for their contribution to the German economic miracle.

Since 2018 she has been moderating the information format "alpha-democracy" alternately with her moderation colleagues at ARD-alpha. In addition, she regularly moderates themed evenings at ARD-alpha, in which a topic is illuminated from different perspectives through documentations, discussions and explanatory contributions.

Sarıkaya is one of the co-founders of the New German Media Makers Initiative , a nationwide association of journalists with and without a migration background who advocate more intercultural competence and sensitivity in journalistic work and reporting. The German Islam Conference assumes that journalists with a migration background, such as Özlem Sarıkaya, will change media reporting and thereby contribute to a more positive image of Islam in the German media .

In addition, Sarıkaya works as a moderator and speaker for intercultural events; and since 2005 she has worked as a speaker in interdisciplinary workshops at various secondary schools in Munich .
