Øygarden (former municipality)
Øygarden was a municipality in the former Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Hordaland . She was relatively flat from about 450 until high as 74 meters islands, Holmen and archipelago in the North Sea and was of fjords surrounded. The majority of the inhabitants lived on the six largest islands, the largest of which was Alvøyna with 12.2 km². Fedje commune bordered on Øygarden in the north, Radøy , Meland and Askøy communes in the east and Fjell commune in the south. The administrative center of Øygarden was Rong.
history
The municipality was created in 1964 from the previous municipality of Hjelme and parts of Herdla herad . 4889 inhabitants lived on an area of 66 km² (as of January 1, 2019).
On January 1, 2020, Øygarden merged with the two municipalities of Fjell and Sund . The new municipality is also called Øygarden .

- Martin Rasmussen Hjelmen (1904–1944), resistance fighter against the German occupation, extradited to Germany by Sweden and killed in the Brandenburg prison.
- Alexander Dale Oen (1985–2012), Norwegian swimmer, world champion 100 m breaststroke swimming world championships 2011
economy
An oil terminal was built in Sture on the island of Alvøyna in 1988, which receives oil from the Oseberg oil field through a pipeline . In Kollsnes on the island of Ona there has been a natural gas cleaning station since 1996.
