Øystein Gaukstad

Øystein Gaukstad (born July 2, 1912 in Lillehammer , † February 29, 1996 in Eidsvoll ) was a Norwegian musicologist and librarian.

Gaukstad studied philology at the University of Oslo from 1932 to 1939, with a focus on Norwegian and German history. His main work here was a biography of Christian Sinding . He also studied piano and organ at the Oslo Conservatory with Nicolai Dirdal and Arild Sandvold, as well as music theory and composition with Gustav Lange , Karl Andersen and Magne Elvestrand .

In 1938 he was hired as a volunteer at the University Library in Oslo. From 1943 he worked there at the Norsk musikksamling (NMS). In 1947 he was given a permanent position as music librarian and manager of the collection, from 1974 to 1981 he held the position of chief librarian. From 1946 to 1952 he was a board member of the Norwegian music teachers 'association ( Norske Musikklæreres Landsforbund ), from 1946 to 1952 board member and until 1958 chairman of the Oslo music teachers' association ( Oslo Musikklærerforening ).

Gaukstad published an article with Knut Thalberg in 1946 under the heading What can be done for Norwegian folk music? . With this motto he devoted himself in the following years to the development of largely insufficiently or not at all registered folk music source material as well as books and articles on the subject. Between 1943 and 1968 he compiled bibliographies on Edvard Grieg , Ole Mørk Sandvik , Johannes Haarklou , Sparre Olsen , Hjalmar Borgstrøm , Harald Sæverud and David Monrad Johansen, among others . As a member of the Classical Committee of the Norwegian Culture Council, he made contributions to Gurvin and Ankers Musikkleksikon , Norsk Allkunnebok and Gyldendals Store Konversasjonsleksikon, among others .
