Gustav Fredrik Lange (born February 22, 1861 in Fredrikshald ; † February 11, 1939 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian violinist , composer and music teacher .

Life

As a child he took violin lessons from Oscar Borg , who was the conductor of a music corps in Halden. From 1878 to 1883 he studied violin with CJ Lindberg and composition with FVL Morcman in Stockholm, where he also passed his organ exam. He then continued his violin training with Hubert Léonard in Paris and Émile Sauret in Berlin.

In 1890 he became first violinist in the orchestra of the Christiania Theater, and in 1899 concertmaster of the orchestra of the Nationaltheatret . From 1919 to 1927 he was second concertmaster of the Filharmonisk Selskaps Orkester , which he also conducted. In addition, he worked as a conductor of the Frimurernes Orkester and the trading stand Orkester . From 1899 to 1906 he also directed his own string quartet, with which he performed in Norway and Sweden.

From 1899 Lange taught violin, music theory and composition at the Kristiania Conservatory. His students included u. a. Bjarne Brustad , Torolf Voss , Johannes Hanssen , Leif Halvorsen , Carsten M. Carlsen , Odd Grüner-Hegge , Øivin Fjeldstad , Arild Sandvold , Henrik Adam Due and Nicolai Dirdal . He published a violin school (1899), a music lesson (1904) and a practical harmony lesson (1897). He was awarded the Royal Medal of Merit (1921) and the Swedish medal litteris et artibus and was named Officier de l'Instruction Publique in France .
