Øystein Lønn (born April 12, 1936 in Kristiansand ) is a Norwegian journalist and writer who received the 1993 Critics' Prizes for the short story collections Thranes metode og andre noveller and the 1996 Literature Prize of the Nordic Council for Hva Skal vi gjøre i dag og other noveller .

Life

Lønn made his writing debut in 1966 with Prosesjonen , a collection of short stories influenced by existentialism and Ernest Hemingway . His narrative style was neutral and characterized by "open" texts that contained puzzles without described solutions. The following books, Kontinentene (1967), the future novel Arkeologene (1971) and the volume of stories Historie (1973) are socially critical texts in an experimental form . Hirtshals Hirtshals , published in 1975, is a major work of Norwegian prose from the 1970s and conveyed a fragmented reality in a corresponding form.

With Veien til Cordoba (1981) Lønn began a new phase of writing, in which he treated social and psychological motives less realistically and often combined them with elements of the detective novel . In Tom Reber siste retrett (1988), a portrait of an in bankruptcy previous shipowner is pronounced the art of his allusions strongest. Thomas Ribes femte sak (1991) comes closest to a detective novel, whereby the eponymous investigator is ultimately killed - although it remains open why and by whom. In 1992 he was awarded the Dobloug Prize.

For the following collections of short stories Thranes metode og andre noveller (1993) he received the critics' prizes in 1993 and for Hva Skal vi gjøre i dag og other noveller (1995) the 1996 literary prize of the Nordic Council . Both collections were characterized by a minimalism that had a major impact on Norwegian prose literature in the years that followed.

In his novel Maren Gripes nødvendige ritualer (1999), he moved the location of the action to an island community in southwestern Norway. With Ifølge Sofia he published the first volume in a trilogy in 2001 , which was continued with Simens stormer (2003) and concluded with Etter Sofia (2010). In this trilogy, Lønn showed himself at his best.

In between, Plutselig landligge appeared in 2006 , an unmistakable “literary novella”, the texts of which represented and explored a wide living space between people and moved in a landscape, whereby it remained open whether this happened in a dream or in reality.
