The Schöffenhaus was the seat of the Electorate Schöffengericht for the city of Koblenz . The building, built from 1528 to 1530 in the late Gothic style, housed part of the Middle Rhine Museum until 2013 . Together with the Bürresheimer Hof , the old department store and the Florinskirche, it forms an ensemble of four historic buildings on the Florinsmarkt.

history

The Schöffenhaus was built under Elector Richard von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads from 1528 to 1530 right next to the old department store on the banks of the Moselle . The building was built above the wooden gate belonging to the city wall and above one of the two walled-in entrances and exits. With its oriel turrets, it reflects the defensive character of a city gate.

At the beginning of the French period (1794–1814) the building was initially used as a home for the peace court , in 1804 the pawn shop , from 1804 to 1813 a masonic lodge and then again the peace court. From 1819 it was left to a women's association to open a free school. After it became the property of the city of Koblenz in 1887, it was used by the arts and crafts and antiquity association until 1919, and then by the city administration.

During the air raids on Koblenz in 1944, the Schöffenhaus was destroyed and it burned down to the walls. The reconstruction took place from 1962 to 1965 according to plans by the Trier building officer Heinrich Otto Vogel (1898–1994) in order to be able to accommodate part of the Middle Rhine Museum .

In 2013 the city of Koblenz sold the Schöffenhaus together with the Bürresheimer Hof , the Old Department Store and the Dreikönigenhaus to a private investor (ISSOflorinsmarkt GmbH & Co. KG) who wants to renovate the building and then accommodate an institute close to the university.

construction

The late Gothic building was built with narrow biaxial fronts made of schisty quarry stone . There are four octagonal, two-story corner towers with bell roofs above the corners. The wider turret in the southwest corner closes off the built-in stair tower. The upper floor has large cross-frame windows with basalt frames and lead glazing. On the Moselle side, after its destruction in World War II, the rectangular bay was reconstructed on wide lugs divided by grooved ribs . In the middle fields of the bay are the coat of arms of Trier Elector Richard von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads and the Schöffenrose, in the upper area is the year 1530. In the barrel vaulted cellar remains of the former driveway and the wooden gate have been preserved. The star vault on the ground floor was recreated in the late Gothic style during the reconstruction. The rooms above were designed in a modern way.
