history

The forerunner of the Sparkasse Koblenz goes back to a decree of April 20, 1804 by the French prefect Mouchard de Chaban to establish a pawn shop. At that time Koblenz had about 10,000 inhabitants and belonged to the French department de Rhin-et-Moselle . Prefect Chaban provided the new institute with 100,000 francs . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Prussians took care of the pawn shop and pawnshop. The institute, later called Leih- und Sparkasse, was responsible for the entire administrative district and remained the only financial institution in the region until 1843. After the city of Koblenz founded its own pawn shop in 1845, the old institute was dissolved and a municipal savings bank was opened.

The municipal savings bank in Ehrenbreitstein was founded in 1885 and came to the Stadtsparkasse Koblenz in 1937 as a result of the incorporation of Ehrenbreitstein. On March 26, 1892, a district savings bank was established for the Koblenz district .

Due to the First World War and the subsequent occupation of the Rhineland by the victorious powers, both savings banks concentrated mainly on the financing of grocery purchases and family support through the local authorities. After the hyperinflation and the introduction of the Rentenmark , most of the accounts went under and the Stadtsparkasse only had a total savings balance of 8,000 Rentenmark.

During the Second World War , the main offices of both savings banks in Koblenz were destroyed in air raids . The business of the Stadtsparkasse was carried out in the branch in Ehrenbreitstein, that of the Kreissparkasse in a hotel in Stolzenfels . After the war, the Americans initially only allowed the Kreissparkasse to run, as it still had large amounts of money. Withdrawing money has now been banned.

In a robbery together with four accomplices, Dieter Freese shot and killed the branch manager of the Winningen office on February 14, 1962 . On March 9, 1962, Freese was caught on the run and later sentenced to a long prison term.

On July 1, 1974, the Stadt- und Kreissparkasse merged to form Sparkasse Koblenz. The merger became necessary mainly because of the previous territorial reform in Rhineland-Palatinate . The old main office of the Sparkasse in Bahnhofstrasse was replaced by a new building in 1977/1978.

A serious bank robbery at the Schenkendorfplatz branch took place on October 5, 1982. Two bank robbers took nine hostages for almost 15 hours. In order to blackmail a getaway vehicle, one of the robbers shot 19-year-old banker Detlef Becker in the knee, who died of a pulmonary embolism a few days later . The perpetrators initially captured 1.2 million DM , but were later caught and convicted of murder.
