history

The first efforts to found a savings bank in Mainz were supported by the then sovereign, Grand Duke Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt . The savings bank finally started its business operations on February 19, 1827 in a provisional office in the city administration. At the beginning the customer deposits amounted to 2,000 guilders, by 1870 the limit of one million guilders was exceeded. This steady growth also made it necessary to expand the premises, so that the company moved into its own checkout rooms in Klarastrasse in 1867 and a new building in Flachsmarktstrasse in 1892.

During the Second World War , the Sparkasse buildings were also directly affected by the air raids on Mainz ; among other things, the administration building on Münsterplatz was completely destroyed. Immediately after the war, the Sparkasse took part in supplying the civilian population with food and stored the coveted CARE packages in their safes until they were distributed . Despite the annexation of the districts on the right bank of the Rhine to the newly created state of Hesse , the Stadtsparkasse kept its branches in Kastel and Kostheim.

In 1973 the Kreis- and Stadtsparkasse merged to form today's Sparkasse Mainz. The merger became necessary mainly because of the previous district reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , after which the Mainz district was dissolved. The main office at Münsterplatz was expanded until the beginning of 1979.
