history

After the decree on the "establishment of district savings banks" was passed on August 15, 1854, the district council decided on October 30, 1854 to establish the district savings bank Mayen. However, it took until December 13, 1856, before the statute of the fund could be signed. On January 1, 1858, the savings bank started operations. The savings bank grew rapidly, because while in 1859 it had savings deposits of 5833 thalers, in 1866 it was 16,000 thalers and in 1876 1.1 million marks. In 1896, acceptance points were created in 11 locations in the district. The reason was the newly founded municipal Sparkasse Mayen. At the beginning of the First World War, the savings deposits had grown to 14 million marks. The subscription of war bonds, hyperinflation and the German banking crisis hit the Sparkasse significantly. During the German banking crisis, the Sparkasse was temporarily unable to meet its obligations. In the time of National Socialism , the savings bank was integrated into the system of the Nazi economy. After the war the balance sheet total was 96 million RM, which was reduced to 8 million DM after the currency reform in 1948 . The Sparkasse began to expand its branch network during the economic boom , so that by 1975 it had grown to 48 branches. On January 1, 1977, 7 of these branches had to be transferred to the Kreissparkasse Ahrweiler and 2 branches to the Kreissparkasse Daun due to the regional reform .
