history

On July 1, 1858, the Kreissparkasse was founded in Bernkastel. On January 1, 1971, the Kreissparkassen Wittlich and Bernkastel merged to form the Kreissparkasse Bernkastel-Wittlich based in Bernkastel-Kues.

After the Kreissparkasse Cochem-Zell closed the 2002 financial year with a deficit of around 19 million euros and thus got into acute difficulties, it had to merge with the Kreissparkasse Bernkastel-Wittlich on January 1, 2003. One day after the first special purpose association meeting of the new savings bank, the former chairman of the board of the Kreissparkasse Cochem-Zell, Walter Krieger, shot himself in his home in Bruttig-Fankel .
