Dieter Freese (born August 14, 1939 in Dreschvitz ) is a German robbery and safe hacker who caused a stir in the press because of his escapes in 1962 and 1989 .

The escapes

In a robbery together with four accomplices, Freese shot and killed the branch manager of the Sparkasse in Winningen on the Moselle on February 14, 1962 . After the fact, the gang members fled separately.

At the end of February, Freese sought shelter in the area around the Siebengebirge , initially in an empty weekend house in Hövel near Aegidienberg and later in the Königswinterer Ofenkaulen . On March 1, a police officer tried to arrest the fugitive there. However, Freese managed to disarm the police officer and flee. With the stolen service weapon , he shot the service dog that was chasing him.

Freese continued to flee. On March 9, two police officers found him near the Czechoslovak border near Freyung . Freese lay completely exhausted and asleep in a wooded area .

In October 1963 he was sentenced to twice life imprisonment. The story of Dieter Freese was the model for episode no.23 of the NDR crime series Stahlnetz under the title The Fifth Man, which was first broadcast on August 23, 1966.

On February 1, 1989, Freese managed to escape from the Diez correctional facility , making the headlines again. Finally, twelve days later , a railway policeman with a sheepdog found Freese sleeping in a sheepfold near Boppard . In 1992 the criminal managed to escape again, although he was only discovered two months later.

On September 27, 1993, Freese was released from the Diez correctional facility after 30 years in prison and transferred to a care home for former long-term inmates in the Euskirchen district . From there he set off. Research by the Rhein-Zeitung in 2012 revealed that Freese's whereabouts have not been clarified. The media had previously reported that Freese had been found dead.
