The regional tram is served by line 11, it is considered the longest regional line in the Czech Republic . Along with the overland routes of Most – Litvínov , Ostrava-Svinov – Kyjovice-Budišovice and Brno – Modrice, it is one of four regional trams in the Czech Republic. Plans for the construction of a tram route from Liberec to Jablonec nad Nisou already existed at the beginning of the 20th century. It was not built until after the Second World War , between 1947 and 1955. The aim was also to connect the existing Jablonec nad Nisou tram with the Liberec tram. Starting from the smaller of the two towns, the first section of the route from Jablonec nad Nisou to the village of Proseč nad Nisou was opened in 1953 . Like the trams from Jablonec nad Nisou and Liberec, the Liberec - Jablonec tram was built with a meter gauge . In 1954, the second section of the railway to Vratislavice, now a part of Liberec, was put into operation. In 1955 the continuation to Liberec followed and thus the integration into the local tram network.

In 1965 the tram in Jablonec nad Nisou was discontinued, since then the tram to and from Liberec has been the only tram line in Jablonec nad Nisou.

After the political change in the former Eastern Bloc , the gauging of the Liberec tram began to be changed to standard gauge (1435 millimeters). A re-gauge of the Liberec-Jablonec nad Nisou tram did not take place despite different plans. Instead, the section of the line in the urban area of Liberec was retrofitted with a three-rail track . To this day, the tram to Jablonec runs in meter gauge.

future plans

By 2020 the line will be changed from meter gauge to standard gauge. Starting in 2018, it will be taken out of service for two years. It will also be extended to the bus station in Jablonec nad Nisou at the same time.

One project for the tram route is to turn it into a city regional tram, the so-called Regiotram Nisa . With it, there was the idea of allowing trains from Jablonec nad Nisou to continue on railway lines to Hrádek nad Nisou . However, from the current point of view, a realization is no longer to be expected in the near future, as the priority of this project was downgraded by the Czech Ministry of Transport for financial reasons.
